A Japanese man has promised to make his girlfriend fall in love with him every day as she suffers from severe amnesia, reminding us of the heartwarming story from the Hollywood blockbuster '50 First Dates'.

Li Huayu must constantly remind his fiancé, 24-year-old Maruyama, of their love as she suffers from amnesia, according to Oddity Central.

While the pair has been together for over two-and-a-half years, their lives changed dramatically after Maruyama was hit by a car while riding her bike nine months ago. After the accident, she didn't recognize any of the people in her life on gaining consciousness — including her parents and the love of her life, Daily Mail reports.

Maruyama's physical injuries started to heal soon after. However, her memory was permanently wiped clean and things started to get worse with each passing day.

Li was forced to call off their wedding due to his fiancé's condition. But he was convinced his girlfriend would eventually remember him and so he decided to stay by her side instead of simply giving up.

Every morning, the loving boyfriend would re-introduce himself to Maruyama and show her proof of their relationship. There was a time when she suggested they break up because of the strain her condition caused him. However, a determined Li told her, "You may have lost your memories, but we can make new ones."

Their moving story bears a strong resemblance to '50 First Dates', a 2004 romantic comedy starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, in which Sandler must remind Barrymore of their love each day following an accident.

Maruyama, whose doctors advised her to keep a diary to help remember things she had done, soon realized Li's dedication towards her. She couldn't help but propose to him.

"Thank you for your care during this time. You understand me very well and have always tolerated this sensitive and fragile version of me," the young woman said. "Recently my symptoms have become more and more serious. Doctors say that the amnesia may get even worse. I may lose my memory again, even forget you forever, are you still willing to be with me?"

During a recent television appearance, Maruyama said, "Because of my amnesia, I have the chance to fall in love with him again. No matter how many times I lose my memory, I believe I will always fall in love with him."
