Is ‘Unchosen’ based on a true story? Netflix’s dark cult thriller takes an unexpected turn as Sam arrives

‘Unchosen’ revolves around Adam (Asa Butterfield) and his wife Rosie (Molly Windsor) as they navigate life in a strict religious community

Netflix’s unsettling drama ‘Unchosen’ has become one of those shows people binge on and then wonder: Is any of this actually real? The answer is not straightforward. At the center of the story is Adam (Asa Butterfield), whose life inside a strict religious community begins to crack when his wife Rosie (Molly Windsor) drifts toward a stranger named Sam. That man, played by Fra Fee, first appears as a rescuer after an accident involving Rosie’s daughter, Grace. But as the story moves forward, it becomes clear that Sam is far from a harmless outsider. The series itself is not a direct retelling of any one real-life event, and the cult it focuses on does not exist in the real world.

However, creator Julie Gearey did not pull these ideas out of thin air. She spent time speaking with people who had lived in similar environments and managed to break away. Many of those conversations took place through online communities and social media, where former members shared their experiences. Speaking to Tudum, Gearey said, “It was important to reassure them as much as we could that, firstly, nobody watching the show would ever recognize them, and, secondly, that whatever they had to say about the emotional experience of being involved, we would try to respect and reflect as truthfully as possible within the show.” One of the more personal threads in the show comes through Adam’s internal conflict.

His struggle to accept his own sexuality while living under strict religious expectations is not just a plot device. Gearey explained, “Several people we met had struggled with their sexuality within these groups. That was a story that kept coming up again and again, if you’re not straight, there’s no place for you.” The show also includes moments that seem shocking but are rooted in real accounts. One such scene featured a disturbing punishment involving alcohol. Gearey shared that former members spoke about similar tactics being used within certain groups. “We spoke to some people who’d escaped a particular group that used alcohol in terms of softening people up,” she said. “In fact, in several of these groups, alcoholism is a real problem, and I think it’s because people are miserable.”

Butterfield also brought his own research into the role. While preparing to play Adam, he watched a 2020 documentary from the BBC that explored life inside a strict Christian movement. Moreover, the spark for Rosie’s character came from a much simpler moment. Years before writing the series, Gearey had a brief interaction with a young religious woman in a grocery store. It was not a long conversation, but it stayed with her. That fleeting connection eventually turned into the foundation for Rosie. So while Netflix’s ‘Unchosen’ is not based on a single true story, it pulls from many real voices and lived experiences.
