Former director of CIA and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in an interview with Fox News on July 6 that the US government is “certainly looking at” banning TikTok and other Chinese social media apps.

He said in his statement, "With respect to Chinese apps on people's cell phones, I can assure you the United States will get this one right too. I don't want to get out in front of the President, but it's something we're looking at.”

The US senators have reportedly expressed concerns about the Chinese app storing private data of its users, which could be used to “support and cooperate with intelligence work controlled by the Chinese Communist Party". Pompeo said he wouldn’t recommend anybody to download or use the app unless “you want your private information in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party".

The decision regarding the possible ban on one of the widely used app has sparked a range of reactions from internet user, who took to Twitter to debate over TikTok being shut down for good. One user wrote, “Well I would hope they do. At least if it’s personal security, like account info and all of that. I don’t have Tik Tok so I’m not sure what form of info you give to them.” While another user tweeted, “Trump banning tik tok is the best thing he’ll do during his presidency.” One said, "Tik Tok is a playground for pedophiles and a data goldmine for the Chinese government. The fact that people still use it is terrifying."

However, TikTok users who have enjoyed using the app and used it as a means to gather huge fan following, seem to be highly disappointed. One tweet read, “So did u hear that tik tok might be banned on USA? This is crazy rlly.... Me I have no words, I just want to cry rn.. But btw i've got a question, @lopez__tony @ondreazlopez what u'll do if tik tok will be banned? U'll not leave us right?”

Another agitated user said, “If Tik Tok really was banned for real, honestly that would kickstart the WW3 because Gen Z is NOTTT having it lol.” One said, "TiK Tok is Chinese spyware. CHINA IS NOT OUR FRIEND  BAN IT NOW. fab gay Latin man for @realDonaldTrump @TuckerCarlson #TuesdayMotivation."

Meanwhile, a few are hoping that even if a ban is imposed on TikTok, an alternative app is invented to serve its purpose. "Tik tok is litteraly my only friend that’s my whole personality. anyways someone make a new app,” wrote one. “If tik tok does get shutdown and we make another app please don't bring politics, race wars, and genders wars in it,” tweeted another.
