The coronavirus pandemic left the world crippled in 2020. Throughout the course of the year, there has been a frantic rush for the 'perfect' vaccine and people in different countries waited impatiently for the numerous candidates to go through the various stages of trials. Finally, there is some hope in the form of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines.

However, the recent update about the Moderna vaccine is that it can cause swelling in people with cosmetic facial fillers, the FDA has warned. Such reactions put stars such as Kylie Jenner at risk, who has lip fillers. According to a report in The Sun, a certified dermatologist in California said the US Food and Drug Administration advisory committee discovered a few trial participants to have experienced specific side-effects.

In response to the FDA's findings, Dr Shirley Chi said: "In these cases the patients all had swelling and inflammation in the area that was given the filler. "A couple of the patients had cheek filler six months prior to their vaccine and one patient had lip filler done two days after the vaccine. All were treated with steroids and anti-histamines and all of their reactions resolved." According to Chi, reactions to the new Moderna vaccine are immunological. She said, "Your immune system which causes inflammation is revved up when you get a vaccine, that's how it's supposed to work. So it makes sense that you would see an immune response in certain areas where they see some substance that is not a naturally occurring substance in your body."

On December 18, the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine was given an emergency authorization by FDA. Following the Pfizer vaccine that was approved for use by the FDA, this was the second option. However, a scientist with Operation Warp Speed revealed that the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine is inducing more allergic reactions than expected.

Dr Moncef Slaoui said that the number of reactions, which are around at least seven in the United States, is significantly more than what would be expected for other vaccines. Currently, more than one million vaccinations have safely been rolled out in the US. He also added that there have been discussions between the vaccine makers and the National Institutes of Health to figure out if they should run clinical trials of Covid-19 vaccines with people who are allergic to things. He mentioned that a trial for people who carry EpiPens with them due to severe allergies could help understand what is leading to such reactions.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which Dr Anthony Fauci oversees, said that they will be looking into the matter. Slaoui said, "There is now advanced planning for a study in highly allergic individuals in clinical trials to test the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines and try to understand the immune mechanisms that are underpinning any reactions.” Earlier, this week, seven people in the US have had allergic reactions after receiving the vaccines.

This week, Alabama’s state health department reported that someone who received Pfizer’s vaccine had a severe allergic reaction several minutes later, but seemed to be recovering. In Illinois, vaccinations of hospital workers were stopped after four employees suffered adverse reactions.
