Is Matt James against dating Black women? 'The Bachelor' sets the record straight on who exactly is his ‘type’

'I don’t understand why that’s so hard for people to understand. People should want you to be happy. Regardless if you’re White, Black or whatever,' said Matt

The cast of suitresses on Matt James’ season of ‘The Bachelor’ is diverse and women from all walks of life are seen vying for his heart. However, even since Matt was introduced on the show, one big question has continued to haunt many and that is “Is Matt against dating Black women?”. It seems like the eligible bachelor has had enough of such doubts surrounding his “type” of women, so he “sets the record straight” about his dating preferences.

In conversation with Mike and Ryan on Bachelor Nation’s ‘Taking It Out’, Matt finally breaks his silence about the infamous opinion about him having race-specific taste in women. When Mike asks “What’s Mr Matt’s type?”, Matt clears the air with an upfront response.

Matt explains, “That’s easy, man. Down to earth genuine person. I have dated beautiful women, I have dated people who thought were beautiful. Other people will be like 'you’re dating her?' And the people they were skeptical about were the best relationships I have had because they were caring, they were compassionate. We respected each other."

"What I am looking for is someone with who I can spend time my life with. And the qualities I am looking for have so little to do with what you look like and more about where your heart is and what kind of person you are,” he added.

Matt on dating Black Women

Without beating around the bush, Ryan next asks Matt directly about his “taste in women” and if he “only dates a certain type of girl”. Matt says in response, “Let me set the record straight here. People for reason think I don’t like Black women. The last women I’ve dated all have been Black women. I don’t understand why that’s so hard for people to understand. People should want you to be happy. Regardless if you’re White, Black or whatever.”

“That’s why I got there and my date life looks like what we saw on day 1. The Spanish women, the White women, Asian women, Black women, and when you are looking for things that aren’t race-specific, you need to have a broader cast of characters that feel all are the same. And thank goodness they had it because it allowed me to enjoy the process.”

Anybody that has been following the latest installment of the dating reality show would have realized by now how big a fan following Matt has and he’s been labeled “the most” good-looking bachelor by many. However, there was a period when Matt felt he was “skinny” and gained 15 pounds on receiving advice from Mike.

Matt says, “Mike said I have a skinny neck and I need to start working out more. After he left my apartment, my workout routine changed and I gained 15 pounds. I started lifting weights.”

Before concluding his interview, Matt revealed that he has gone shirtless many times this season, as he wanted to “mix up” the concept of taking the shirt off while running or skating. So be prepared yourself for many more shirtless shots of Matt under the shower as the season progresses.

'The Bachelor' airs on Mondays at 8 pm ET on ABC.
