HENRICO, VIRGINIA: In a major development in the Irvo Otieno case, seven Virginia deputies have been charged with murder. The officers from Henrico County, Virginia, were arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the death of the inmate. The victim is a 28-year-old man who was being transferred to Central State Hospital on Monday, March 6, when he reportedly became ‘combative’ during the intake procedure, said police. As per WRIC, Otieno was then physically restrained, following which he died.

The deputies were taken into custody on Tuesday, March 14. They are set to appear before a grand jury on Tuesday, March 21, state records show. Currently, all seven deputies have been placed on administrative leave until the outcome of the cases filed against them. Meanwhile, the Henrico County Sheriff's Office is carrying out an independent review of the incident and said it will fully cooperate with another investigation by Virginia State Police. "Public safety is what we stand for as a sheriff's office. We will continue to maintain the highest professional standards in how we serve and protect those in our custody, the community-at-large, and our staff," Henrico County Sheriff Alisa Gregory said in a statement.
