LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: On Wednesday, April 3, Warner Bros. announced that a fifth 'Matrix' movie was in development, but it looks like OG fans aren't thrilled about the news.

The upcoming installment of the series will mark a significant change as Lana or Lily Wachowski won't be directing for the first time. Instead, Drew Goddard, known for his work on 'The Martian', will take over directing responsibilities, according to Variety.

Goddard will also handle the scriptwriting and produce the film alongside Sarah Esberg from Goddard Textiles. Lana Wachowski, who directed the latest 'Matrix' film, 'Resurrections', will remain involved as an executive producer.

'Matrix' 5 announcement has left fans disappointed in Warner Bros (@warnerbros)

Despite its groundbreaking effects and deep themes, 'The Matrix' series has struggled to remain relevant. 'The Matrix Resurrections' from 2021 failed to revive the franchise's previous success, resulting in poor box office performance.

Critics and audiences found it disappointing, failing to capture the originality or box office success of its predecessors. This left fans uncertain about the future of 'The Matrix'.

Nevertheless, the recent announcement of the franchise's revival has been met with disappointment from fans who consider it nothing more than unexciting news they didn't want to hear.

Fans slam Warner Bros for trying to 'milk' the franchise

Many fans took to X to slam Warner Bros for trying to exploit 'The Matrix' franchise as one said, "Man the Matrix was over for me after Matrix 3. All this other trash can stop. Just like that The Crow remake. Just stop & create new original movies," while another fan wrote, "I’m convinced studios don’t watch their films and only look at $. Not that Resurrections was amazing, but I don’t see any need to develop a fifth installment since the ending is fine the way it is."

A fan, criticizing the former directors of the series commented, "I thought Wachowski tried to make the last one bad on purpose so the studio would not dare make another one," to which a fan replied saying, "I guess WB is just that desperate."

One frustrated fan wrote, "They weren't satisfied with the latest bombshell, they're going to bury the franchise once and for all." "Milking the franchise like robots the humans," wrote another disappointed fan. "WB milking its franchises all to the last drop," tweeted a fan.

Fans aren't quite looking forward to a new 'Matrix' movie after 'The Matrix Resurrections'

Many fans express that their lack of optimism for this movie stems from the disappointment of the fourth installment, which they consider a complete disaster.

One user wrote, "I guess that fourth movie failing completely wasn’t enough of a lesson for the studio," while another user said, "I literally had to watch the 4th one in portions as I couldn't stand watching it."

One fan sarcastically wrote, "You could have Neo sitting in a room for 2 hours reading a book and it would still better than the last one." "The 4th movie sucked. Why didn't they just leave this as a trilogy? Ruining the brand...," commented a user.
