NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: New York Democratic Rep Dan Goldman has been trying to retract a remark he made against former President Donald Trump, which set off a social media uproar.

The 47-year-old Goldman, who represents New York's 10th Congressional District, called for Trump to be “eliminated” as he made a guest appearance on MSNBC's 'Inside With Jen Psaki' on Sunday, November 19.

He told Psaki that Trump should never serve in public office again due to his refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election, which, according to a federal indictment, sparked attempts to rig the election and resulted in the riot on January 6.

But Goldman's choice of words brought widespread condemnation on social media. "His rhetoric is really getting dangerous, more and more dangerous," the congressman said.

"And we saw what happened on January 6. When he uses inflammatory rhetoric now, and his recent Truth Social posts, is incredibly, incredibly scary for anyone that might be trying to work in government,” he claimed.

"It is just unquestionable at this point that that man cannot see public office again. He is not only unfit. He is destructive to our democracy, and he has to be eliminated," he added.

Rep Dan Goldman apologizes for his remarks

Following a furious backlash, Goldman apologized for his "poor choice of word" when he called for Trump to be “eliminated.”

“Yesterday on TV, I mistakenly used the wrong word to express the importance for America that Donald Trump doesn’t become President again,” he wrote on Twitter on Monday.

“While he must be defeated, I certainly wish no harm to him and do not condone political violence. I apologize for the poor choice of words,” he continued.

Following the apology, the Trump campaign stated to The NY Post on Monday that Goldman's comments were not so surprising.

“Democrats have been calling for violence against President Trump and his supporters since 2016. This is not new or surprising rhetoric from disgusting liberals,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement.

Internet reacts to Goldman’s apology

After Goldman’s apology, a number of social media users slammed him for what some interpreted as “incitement.”

“So it's okay for you. It's just a MISSPEAK. If President Trump had said that you would have had him raided and locked up. Apology not accepted,” one user said.

“You are a LIAR. Is that how Democrats plan on dealing with Trump? You’re going to “eliminate” him? Who’s going to pull the trigger for you?” another wrote.

“Lol. Everyone knew what you meant,” a third user slammed while a fourth stated, “It was a clear statement. This is what led your left wing lunatics to shoot up a GOP baseball game. You know what you did.”

“Apology NOT accepted. We need a GAG ORDER on you just like they put on Trump,” someone else wrote. “You are a lawyer sir. You used the wrong "choice" of words. I don't believe you,” another said.
