'He should clean up his subways': NYC mayor Eric Adams slammed for saying Jordan Neely 'didn't deserve to die'
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK CITY: Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City, announced that the city has begun to enhance its treatment of those who were suffering from mental illness after Jordan Neely's tragic death made headlines. However, Adams' statement that "Jordan Neely did not deserve to die" during a news conference on Wednesday, May 10 has drawn a lot of criticism online.
A freelance journalist who witnessed the tragic incident said that Neely started screaming and yelling at other passengers as soon as he got on the train. Neely, 30, apparently had a psychotic episode while being choked to death on Monday, May 1 in a Manhattan subway by Marine veteran Daniel Penny, 24. At the press conference, Adams said, "One of our own is dead. A Black man, Black like me, a man named Jordan, the name I gave my son. A New Yorker who struggled with tragedy, trauma and mental illness," according to Fox News.

Adams added, "One thing we know for sure, Jordan Neely did not deserve to die." They were Adams's first significant comments regarding Neely's death, which had triggered numerous protests, about 20 arrests, and calls for Penny to be charged.
The 'Supportive Interventions Act', which would make it simpler to act when people with mental illness reject treatment, was something Adams pushed the state legislature to pass. He said, "It is time to build a new consensus around what can and must be done for those living with serious mental illness," according to Fox News.
'He also didn't deserve to be a free man'
On Twitter, many individuals reacted to Adams' comments, particularly the claim that "Jordan Neely did not deserve to die." One person wrote, "And the people on that Subway didn't deserve to worry they were about to die." Another person wrote, "Then maybe he should clean up his subways so people don't fear for their safety."
