Internet rages as judge drops Hunter Biden gun charge, but here's why she did it
WASHINGTON, DC: A judge signed off on a prosecution request dismissing a gun count that had been part of a collapsed plea deal in the Hunter Biden case on wednesday, October 11.
The order from US District Judge Maryellen Noreika formally removes a gun-possession charge which has at present been replaced by an unrelated three-count indictment.
What was the gun charge against Hunter Biden?
Hunter Biden was charged with the violation of measures against drug users having firearms.
The president's son had bought and kept a revolver for about 11 days in 2018, a period during which he has acknowledged struggling with addiction.
How did Hunter Biden plea to the gun charge?
The junior Biden pleaded not guilty earlier in October, as the case moved towards a potential trial with the 2024 election knocking at the door. His lawyers have stated that he did not break the law and they planned to push for dismissal of the indictment.
The 53-year-old was originally expected to plead guilty to misdemeanor tax counts in an agreement with prosecutors. That would have allowed him to avoid prosecution on a single gun possession charge related to the 2018 purchase if he stayed clean and out of trouble.
However, in July, the deal collapsed after Noreika raised questions about it. The current gun indictment was filed weeks after that.
Special counsel David Weiss is yet to file any new tax count against Biden.

"It’s discouraging. I think some people will never be held accountable. Yet, those same people who escape prosecution will go after those who question them with a vengeance," was another's opinion.

A user explained, "They just dropped the old gun charge that was related to the diversion agreement. There are three new federal gun charges still in play. The dismissal on the original charge is just DOJ housecleaning."
