Internet has no sympathy as Jamaal Bowman may face arrest after he was seen pulling fire alarm to disrupt shutdown vote
WASHINGTON, DC: In a stunning turn of events on Capitol Hill, Democrat Representative Jamaal Bowman of New York is facing intense scrutiny and backlash after he allegedly pulled a fire alarm in an attempt to disrupt House Republicans during a crucial debate on a stopgap bill aimed at preventing a government shutdown.
The incident occurred in the Cannon Building, home to numerous Congressional offices, as lawmakers raced against the clock to pass a plan to keep the government funded before the looming midnight deadline on Saturday, September 30.
The House of Representatives ultimately passed a short-term funding solution, extending government operations for 45 days, but without additional funding for Ukraine. The bill was a bipartisan effort, with Speaker Kevin McCarthy seeking support from Democrats to ensure its passage.
However, as the House teetered on the brink of a government shutdown, all eyes turned to Jamaal Bowman, who found himself at the center of a political firestorm.
Jamaal Bowman claims it was a genuine mistake
The former school principal has claimed that the fire alarm incident was a genuine mistake, insisting that he thought it would "open a door" to expedite his path to a voting location. He defended his actions, stating, "I was rushing to make a vote, I was trying to get to a door."

The incident drew immediate attention, with a spokesperson for the Congressional Administration Committee announcing an investigation into why the fire alarm was pulled. Despite Bowman's protestations that he had no intention of delaying the vote, questions and doubts have persisted.
Meanwhile, Speaker Kevin McCarthy wasted no time in challenging his conservative critics, inviting them to attempt his ousting, and calling for an Ethics Committee investigation into Bowman's actions. He argued, "This should not go without punishment."
The ramifications of Bowman's actions extend beyond mere political wrangling.
Potential legal consequences
Under DC law, knowingly or willfully pulling a false fire alarm within the city can lead to a misdemeanor fine of up to $100 and imprisonment of up to six months. The US Capitol Police have confirmed an investigation into the incident to determine precisely what transpired and why.
Republicans, led by Representative Nicole Malliotakis of New York, have initiated efforts to expel Bowman from Congress, citing his actions as unacceptable. A photo, seemingly showing Bowman pulling the alarm, circulated among Capitol Police personnel, further fueling the controversy.
This is the United States Congress, not a New York City high school. This action warrants expulsion & I’m introducing a resolution to do just that. https://t.co/rfnLDzFHmK

Even Georgia's Republican representative Marjorie Taylor Greene weighed in, calling on the Justice Department to prosecute Bowman "using the same law they used to prosecute J6 defendants for interfering with an official proceeding."

Bowman's actions resulted in the evacuation of the Cannon Building, a disruption that occurred just hours before House representatives were set to vote on a bill crucial to avert a government shutdown.
The bill ultimately passed with a vote of 335-91 and has now moved to the Senate for consideration.
Social media backlash against Jamaal Bowman
Bowman was excoriated for his actions on social media. Many questioned the congressman's credibility as a former school principal who should have had in-depth knowledge of public building fire alarm systems.
"Former school principal and current Democrat insurrection participant Jamal Bowman lies regarding his criminal act, telling reporters he believed pulling fire alarms opened doors," one posted on X.
"A school principal would have detailed knowledge of a public building's fire alarm system having had a vast amount of instruction and practice training and running drills at the school where he was the authority over the safety and well-being of the public in his facility. Investigators should immediately obtain said records to utilize during his prosecution," another wrote.
"Well, that's what I always do to open doors - pull the fire alarm! I thought he initially said he didn't think the fire alarm would go off in all the buildings but didn't say why he pulled it in the first place. One lie after another after another after another," someone else added.
"The question is not if Jamaal Bowman will be charged with felony obstruction of an official proceeding. The question is: what reason are they going to come up with to explain why he won’t be," another offered.
