Internet hails Mike Johnson as 'blessing from God’ as new Speaker supports $14B for Israel on 'Hannity'
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson called on President Joe Biden to divide his $100 billion supplementary budget request, allocating funds for both Ukraine and Israel during his appearance on ‘Hannity’ on October 26.
This move comes amid concerns that Republicans may not fully support a standalone Ukraine package.
Johnson also emphasized to Fox News anchor Sean Hannity that the United States firmly supports Israel. Simultaneously, he stressed the importance of lawmakers and the Biden administration coming together to find common ground and recognizing that "God is not done" with America.
While speaking on ‘Hannity,’ he mentioned that the House is prepared to present a $14.5 billion support bill for Israel. This amount slightly exceeds the request made by Israel through the White House, as stated by the Louisiana Republican.
Sean Hannity questioned Mike Johnson on the $14B Israel fund
Fox News anchor Sean Hannity recently had an exclusive interview with newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson. Hannity’s interview was also the first TV interview of Johnson since becoming House Speaker.
When asked about the $14 billion fund for Israel, Johnson added, “I told the staff at the White House today that our consensus among House Republicans is that we need to bifurcate those issues.”
In President Biden's budget proposal, there is a provision for $14 billion in support for addressing the situation in Gaza, as well as $61 billion allocated for Ukraine's defense against potential threats from Russia. Additionally, the budget includes funding for US border security and support for Taiwan.
The issue of funding for Ukraine has become a source of growing controversy among House Republicans. This was evident when they opposed the inclusion of Ukraine-related funding in the continuing resolution passed in late September to ensure the government's continued operations.
Johnson expressed his continued support for the Ukrainian efforts in the conflict with Russia, emphasizing that the House should concentrate on limited spending.
He said, “Now, we can’t allow Vladimir Putin to prevail in Ukraine, because I don’t believe it would stop there, and it would probably encourage and empower China to perhaps make a move on Taiwan. We have these concerns.”
“We’re not going to abandon them. But we have a responsibility, a stewardship responsibility, over the precious treasure of the American people. And we have to make sure that the White House is providing the people with some accountability for the dollars,” Johnson continued.
He also voiced criticism of the Biden administration's approach to the Ukrainian war effort, highlighting a lack of clarity regarding the White House's long-term objectives and the "endgame" for sustained support.
Regarding the proposed spending bill, Senator Johnson stated that the House plans to introduce a stand-alone $14 billion bill to provide support to Israel, matching the request made by the White House. Additionally, a group of GOP senators introduced a similar bill in the Senate on Thursday.
Moreover, Israel's campaign against Hamas has garnered robust bipartisan support, with the conflict commencing earlier this month following a surprise attack that resulted in a substantial loss of life, primarily among civilians.
With this regard, Johnson said, “One thing that House Republicans are resolved on is that we must stand with our most important ally in the Middle East, and that’s Israel. We will. We certainly hope that it doesn’t come to boots on the ground.”
He added, “But funding is key at the end of the day.”
“We deeply care and are concerned about all nations of free people around the world, but we have to take care of our own house first, and so that’s also part of this delicate calculation and the decision,” Johson concluded.
