DENVER, COLORADO: The internet was furious after a leaked video showed Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert getting handsy with her date at Denver's Buell Theater while watching 'Beetlejuice the Musical'. Many social media users insisted it was an invasion of her privacy.

The incident, which occurred on September 10, 2023, involved a series of actions that ultimately led to Boebert and her date being escorted out of the theater.

The evening began with Boebert entering the theater, and she was immediately caught on camera vaping as she searched for her seat.

Fellow theatergoers were understandably surprised as vaping is typically prohibited in indoor public spaces. Her actions drew initial attention, but it was only the beginning of a series of disruptions during the performance.

Lauren Boebert's leaked video

During the show, security cameras captured Boebert and her male companion engaging in what appeared to be intimate behavior. The surveillance clip, obtained by TMZ, revealed her date fondling her breast, and Boebert herself reaching between his legs.

This continued for several minutes, with Boebert even grinning and squirming in her seat at one point before placing another hand below her partner’s belt.

The choice of performance, 'Beetlejuice the Musical', is recommended for children aged 10 and up by The Broadway League, which could make these actions inappropriate for the family-friendly atmosphere of the theater despite it being a dark setting.

Boebert's actions, including vaping and disruptive dancing in her seat with the flash on while taking photos of herself, were widely seen as a breach of theater etiquette.

However, the theater -- along with several publications including TMZ -- faced a major backlash for making the salacious footage public, with many claiming it was an outright invasion of the congresswoman's privacy.

"Who’s filming? What the hell is wrong with that person!" one social media tweeted.

"What’s the problem?" another wondered.

"I’ve had to sit next to couples during movies and it literally does not bother me at all let them enjoy life," someone else chimed in.

"She went on a date! If she's wrong for getting handsy in a dark theater I think we all are!" another offered.

In response to the incident, the Buell Theater received three separate complaints about Boebert and her date. They were accused of vaping, singing loudly, and causing a disturbance during the performance.

The venue also released a video showing theater staff escorting the couple out of the theater, although their identities were not initially disclosed.

The situation escalated when Boebert reportedly made comments akin to "Do you know who I am?" and "I will be contacting the mayor," according to representatives from the theater.

The congresswoman and her date initially refused to leave the premises, only complying when they were informed that the police were on their way.

Lauren Boebert issues apology

On social media, Lauren Boebert admitted to "laughing and singing too loud" but denied vaping initially despite a pregnant theatergoer's request for her to put away the vaping device. However, as video footage of her actions circulated on social media, she was compelled to address the incident.

Boebert, a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump, clarified that she did not intend to lie and genuinely did not recall vaping during the evening when discussing the events with her campaign team.

She attributed her actions to her ongoing divorce from her husband of 16 years, Jayson Boebert, citing the challenges of going through a public and difficult divorce. She filed for divorce in May, citing irreconcilable differences.

In her apology statement, she expressed regret for the unwanted attention her actions brought to the community and acknowledged that her behavior fell short of her values.

“There’s no perfect blueprint for going through a public and difficult divorce, which over the past few months has made for a challenging personal time for me and my entire family,” she said on Friday, September 15.

"The past few days have been difficult and humbling, and I'm truly sorry for the unwanted attention my Sunday evening in Denver has brought to the community," Boebert stated, as reported by various media outlets.

"While none of my actions or words as a private citizen that night were intended to be malicious or meant to cause harm, the reality is they did, and I regret that," she added.
