Ron DeSantis administration's response to student chapters supporting Hamas
Ray Rodrigues, the chancellor of the State University System of Florida, expressed deep concern in a letter sent exclusively to Fox News Digital. He highlighted that during a sacred Jewish holiday, the "recognized terrorist organization" Hamas initiated an unprovoked attack on Israel, causing casualties, including women, infants, and the elderly.
To date, the conflict has resulted in the loss of approximately 1,400 Israeli lives, including 31 American citizens.
Governor DeSantis, the State University System, and the Florida College System have vehemently condemned these attacks.
In this context, Rodrigues stated, "These chapters exist under the headship of the National Students for Justice in Palestine, who distributed a toolkit identifying themselves as part of the Operation AlAqsa Flood."
Legal implications for student chapters supporting Hamas in Florida
In the letter, it is made clear that providing support to a designated foreign terrorist organization is a felony under Florida law. The student group in question, the National Students for Justice in Palestine (National SJP), was found to have published a toolkit referring to the Hamas operation as "the resistance."
The toolkit also indicated that "Palestinian students in exile are PART of this movement, not in solidarity with this movement."
Based on these findings, the letter specifies that "in consultation with Governor DeSantis, the student chapters must be deactivated. These two student chapters may form another organization that complies with Florida state statutes and university policies."
Furthermore, Chancellor Rodrigues expressed a commitment to working with Governor DeSantis's office to employ all available measures to curb campus activities that exceed the boundaries of protected First Amendment rights and extend into harmful support for terrorist groups.
This could potentially include adverse employment actions and suspensions for school officials.
