Every year on April 13, International FND Awareness Day is observed to raise awareness and promote treatment for Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). FND is estimated to affect around four to 12 individuals per 100,000. The development of this condition can be attributed to various biological factors, including early childhood trauma, anxiety, or maltreatment.

FND is a neurological condition caused by a malfunction in the nervous system, which disrupts the proper transmission and reception of signals by the brain. Patients with FND exhibit various neurological symptoms, including movement disorders and sensory issues, which can be attributed to the nervous system's inability to function correctly.

History of International FND Day

The event first came to light in 2013 courtesy FND Hope, a charitable organization that supports patients, families, and caregivers affected by FND.

FND can imitate other illnesses, leading to frequent misdiagnosis. Despite its high frequency, the root cause of FND is not yet known. In the past, it was commonly classified as a psychological disorder that resulted in physical symptoms of repressed trauma.

Importance of International FND Day

1. Spread awareness about FND and the struggles that people with the condition face. Many misconceptions about FND exist, causing harm to patients and their families. By prioritizing awareness and research, we can support everyone affected by FND.

2. To educate healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the general public about FND to promote better understanding.

3. We must improve access to accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment for individuals impacted by FND.

Surrounding yourself with positivity can help reduce stress and potentially prevent an FND attack.
