Ilhan Omar's father passed away on Monday, June 15, Omar revealed. The 67-year-old Nur Omar Mohamed died from coronavirus-related complications after being in a coma at the Hennepin Medical Center for the last eight days. Ilhan's sister was at their father's side when he took his last breath.

Mohamed had reportedly banned Ilhan from sitting at his bedside while having a heated argument over her affair and marriage to Tim Mynett. Omar had posted, "It is with tremendous sadness and pain that I share that my father, Nur Omar Mohamed, passed away today due to complications from Covid-19." She shared, "No words can describe what he meant to me and all who knew him. My family and I ask for your respect and privacy during this time."

A friend close to the family spoke to Daily Mail and revealed, "He told the family he did not want Ilhan near him and wanted Sahra to be in charge of everything. He thought that was very demeaning that she should be walking around in public like that. They have hardly spoken in three months," the source added while referring to some pictures which showed she and her husband walking with his hand on her rear.

"He has been very angry about the shame his daughter brought upon him and the family for having an affair while married," the insider had added. Omar's spokesman Jeremy Slevin, however, has denied that the two had any falling out. "They talk regularly and recently had Iftar together," he said. It has been reported that Omar's father, Nur Mohamed had moved to the United States along with Sahra and Ilhan back in 1995 after spending more than four years in a camp for Somali refugees in Kenya.

Ilhan had published a memoir this year where she had opened up on some of her childhood experiences and had also revealed that she had a "Britney Spears-style meltdown, shaving off her hair and eloping" with a British man Ahmed Elmi. In the book, Ilhan switches from saying her father was sometimes strict and sometimes liberal. She shared that she often wished he had been tougher on her when she was a child and that he and her grandfather "were annoyingly accommodating to each person's opinion."

However, at the same time, Ilhan said her father would get upset with her during her teenage years if her clothes revealed too much skin. "He wouldn't have been fixated on the fact that a shirt didn't cover up my chest enough but rather on the fact that he had failed to teach me that my value as a human wasn't based on the extent of my body that I had on display," Ilhan said.

"He would have blamed himself for not giving me enough self-esteem, resources, or love," she added. "Although most other kids my age went to clubs, I never went—not because I would be tempted to drink. No, I worried about there being a shooting or a fire and getting stuck or dying inside and my father's having to live with the fact that I had been in a club." She added, "My friends joked that I was more afraid of my father than I was afraid of God. God is forgiving. My father isn't."
