MOSCOW, IDAHO: The suspect arrested in the murders of the four University of Idaho students was reportedly "shocked" by the allegations against him and was planning to deny the charges. Bryan Kohberger, 28, was arrested on Friday, December 30, 2022, in Pennsylvania for allegedly murdering, Kaylee Gonvalves, 21, Ethan Chapin, 20, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Madison Mogen, 21 in their off-campus home on November 13, 2022.
Monroe County Chief Public Defender Jason LaBar said that Kohberger was eager to be exonerated and had agreed to work with police to clear his name. "Mr. Kohberger is eager to be exonerated of these charges and looks forward to resolving these matters as promptly as possible," LaBar told CNN. He also stated that Kohberger will agree to forego his extradition hearing, which was scheduled for Tuesday, January 3, in order to be extradited to Idaho.

As per Daily Mail, police currently believe Kohberger, a Washington State University graduate student, was alone responsible for the heinous murders. LaBar reportedly said that Kohberger was "shocked a little bit" by the allegations against him but "he's calm right now." "We don't really know much about the case. I don't have any affidavit or probable cause. I didn't want to discuss the case with him because I'm merely his representation for this procedural issue as to whether or not he wants to be extradited back to Idaho," LsBar said.
The defense attorney claimed Kohberger's family was left shocked when authorities raided their home in the Poconos before sunrise on Friday. "They're also very shocked. Out of character for Bryan… The FBI, local police, and Idaho State Troopers were at their house at approximately 3 am yesterday knocking on the door and announcing themselves to enter, out of real shock and awe to them," LaBar reportedly said.
After his arrest, Moscow Police chief James Fry told Fox News, "We truly believe we have the individual that committed these crimes." Fry confirmed that the suspect's parents' Poconos house was where the white Hyundai Elantra, which the police had been searching for many weeks, was discovered. He also lamented the fact that Kohberger was a criminology student in Pullman, Washington, nearby. "That's not what we want in our profession. We hold ourselves to a higher standard, and we hold ourselves to an ethical standard," Fry reportedly said.
Amid the arrest, Kaylee Goncalves’ father Steve revealed that once police told him and his family about the suspect. He said that the family had started noticing connections between the suspect and his daughter but was not ready to discuss them yet as the police investigation was still on. "Now that there's a person and a name that someone can specifically look for and see if there are any connections in any way. So they're just trying to figure it out,' the family's attorney, Shanon Grey, told ABC News. The grieving father described Kohberger as a "broken soul, pitiful human being" and that he was "the little coward that had finally got caught running."
