CLARKSVILLE, INDIANA: David "Red" Worrall, a former Clarksville Town Council member, died on Election Day after collapsing while interacting with voters at a polling site on Tuesday.

The 59-year-old died at the hospital, shortly after being rushed from the Renaissance Academy polling station. At the time of his death, Worrall was an At-Large candidate for the town council.

According to a statement released by town officials, Worrall abruptly collapsed while he was introducing himself to voters at the polling place at Clarksville's Renaissance Academy, as reported by WDRB.

In a statement announcing his death, the Town of Clarksville wrote, "It is with heavy hearts that we extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of David 'Red' Worrall, who passed away earlier this afternoon."



 

Who was David 'Red' Worrall?

According to PEOPLE, the 59-year-old Republican was the District 3 Town Councilman for Clarksville for one term before resigning to address health concerns.

He claimed in his official candidate bio to have been "approached by several groups of people" who urged him to seek public office once more, and he felt "up to the task of making another run."

Besides representing District 3 on the town council for one term, Worrall was the owner of Worrall's Automotive and Machine Shop for 35 years, per Newsweek.

Worrall was running for town council at-large at the time of his death. According to WDRB, he came in third posthumously.

The Town of Clarksville hailed Worrall for his public service and said in a statement, "David’s dedication to our community was truly commendable. We will never forget his passion for public service and his unwavering desire to create positive change in our town."

Five candidates were running for two at-large seats on the town council, including Worrall. Both of the winning candidates honored his passing on social media after the election.

Friends, family, and colleagues pay tribute to David 'Red' Worrall

Republican council member Jennifer Voignier, who was reelected on Tuesday, posted on Facebook, pleading with people to "Please say a prayer for his mom, brother and sister, family and all his close friends. He was a close and very dear friend who I greatly miss!!! RIP Red!!"



 

Democratic council member-elect Bob McEwen wrote on Facebook, saying, "Yesterday is still a blur in my mind. While working at the poll with family and friends of both parties we were reminded how fragile life can be."

"Our community will not forget the good things Red epitomized about our community. His love of family, love of friends, and a love and pride of the town we all call home."



 

Several other Internet users paid homage to the late Indiana Council member, with one saying on Facebook, "This makes me so sad. I have known Dave since first grade and he was one of the nicest people I know. I love how close he was to his family. Praying for them, especially his mother Wanda."

Another one added: "We lost a great person today. Red was a true gentleman. Prayers to his family. My heart hurts but I know Red is in a better place and hanging out with his dad Dave. I miss them both."

"Praying for his family and friends! So very heartbroken," added another one.
