Trump's farewell event felt like a 'funeral' because many people were crying, says former deputy press secretary

Social media was not kind towards Gidley for his latest comments, which actually seem to be an attempt to paint Trump as a likeable former president

When Donald Trump left the White House, a large section of America was rejoicing. However, former deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley has revealed that the former president's staff might just have shed some tears during his departure farewell. Former deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley recalls how an attendant at Trump's farewell cried during the ceremony.

Speaking on the latest episode of Showtime's 'The Circus, Gidley recalled conversations he had with others present during the event, where one attendee remarked that the ceremony "felt like it was a funeral" while another said, "the country died".

"There were a lot of people crying, of course," he told interviewer Alex Wagner. "I felt one person next to me commented, they felt like it was a funeral. In a way, they were at a funeral. A person said, 'In many ways, the country died'."

Gidley served as press secretary until June of last year and went on to become the press secretary for Trump's re-election campaign. He was among those who attended the event at Maryland's Joint Base Andrews on January 20 morning, where several hundred supporters, including the then-first family and other officials, gathered to hear Trump's final remarks as president.

The former president began by telling supporters he loved them "from the bottom of my heart" and thanking family members. It is at this point that people started crying, Gidley said. "It was when the president started speaking," he said, "A girl I know that worked with in the White House who all day was like, 'I'm going to be fine. It's all OK, this is how it should be. Everything is fine.'

"As soon as he start speaking, I looked out — tears were pouring out from her glasses, and she said, 'I'm not fine, I'm not fine, I'm not fine'."

The former president's eldest son Donald Trump Jr, his fiancée Kimberly Guilfoyle, daughter Ivanka Trump, her husband Jared Kushner attended the ceremony, along with Tiffany and other Trump family members, including the grandchildren. We can't tell about White House staffers but Trump's family sure cried as photographs from the ceremony appeared to show Ivanka fighting back tears during her father's speech.

Social media is not kind towards Gidley for his latest comments, which actually seem to be an attempt to paint Trump as a likeable former president.

"That’s what happens when you incite violence and insurrection," one tweeted. "Crying and weeping about the last gasps of white supremacy....." another added. "Lol...they mistook the nears of joy!!!" yet another added along similar lines.

Many tweets revolved around the fact that Trump is hardly the most reliable of leaders, as his last actions in office prove. Why then, shed tears? "What is with this huckster that people believe in the con man? He would sell them out in a NY minute, yet they don't seem to realize it? What is wrong with them?" another user shared on Twitter.

Gidley is known to be somewhat of a Trump fan. Earlier this month, he called Donald Trump "the most masculine person I think to ever hold the White House is the president of the United States," words for which he was highly criticised. And for exactly this reason, Gidley is not in everyone's good books.

"What Frigging Joke. I watched it, maybe 200 attendees, the only ones crying were his kids over the loss of their Grift. Just more Trump Bullshit from a Sycophant," one user on Twitter harshly criticised him.
