Social media strongly backed Hillary Clinton on December 30, after the former presidential candidate warned her party about the upcoming 2022 midterms. In an interview with MSNBC's Willie Geist, Clinton said "it is a time for some careful thinking about what wins elections," issuing a veiled warning about the far-left in the Democratic party. Rather than take a dig at Clinton, many users online backed her comments and slammed the party for its current state.

The 2022 midterms are lining up to be one of the most significant in recent times, with Biden's agenda firmly dead as Republicans control the Senate. The GOP has also begun fielding more extreme candidates, hoping to cash in on Trump's popularity to take back the House and Senate. As we reported earlier, the GOP stands a good chance of retaking Congress, thanks to redistricting, which they control in several states.

Between redistricting and a slew of changes to voting laws making it harder for minorities to vote, the Democrats already face an uphill task to retain the seats in 2022. Things could get much harder if they attempt to field more radical candidates, as Clinton noted, which would alienate a large chunk of voters firmly in the center.

Clinton's warning to the Dems

"I think that it is a time for some careful thinking about what wins elections, and not just in deep blue districts where a Democrat and a liberal Democrat or so-called progressive Democrat is going to win," Clinton told Geist. She went on to note, "But at the end of the day, nothing is going to get done if you don't have a Democratic majority in the House, in the Senate, and our majority comes from people who win in much more difficult districts and our majority in the Senate comes from people who can win in not just blue states and hold those wins... but can win in more purpleish states."

That's where the Dems have really suffered over the past few years. Recently, they lost Virginia's gubernatorial election, and have also seen their majority drastically reduced thanks to the rise of far-right members in battleground states. Adding to that, there's the infighting in the Democratic party that's left many feeling helpless. Members of 'The Squad' have opposed President Joe Biden on several occasions, as have centrists like Joe Manchin. It's left much of the president's agenda struggling to pass, even before it comes up for a full house vote.

Noting that impasse, Clinton said, "at the end of the day, it means nothing. If we don't have a Congress that will get things done and we don't have a White House that we can count on to be sane and sober and stable and productive."

'Party has gone completely off the rails'

Normally, such comments would be met with widespread pushback, but it appears that wasn't the case this time. "What far left turn? We can't even get moderate shit passed," one user noted. Another tweeted, "Too late. Party has gone completely off the rails." Another said, "She is right. The vast majority of Americans tend to be middle of the road. The weird fringes like the Squad and Orange golem don't help us, ultimately they divide us further."

Others though weren't too happy Clinton was out giving advice. "Why should anyone take advice from someone who lost an election against a reality tv host?" one person asked. Another tweeted, "Why are people still consulting the Clintons? Democrats need to uphold their campaign promises, before thinking of 2022 midterms." One user said, "Why is she even relevant still? She needs to just give it up."
