NEW YORK: New York City Mayor Eric Adams has found himself at the center of controversy and criticism as he embarks on a visit to Mexico to discuss the ongoing migrant crisis.

Meanwhile, back in Staten Island, residents living near a controversial shelter for recent migrant arrivals are expressing their frustration over City Hall's handling of the crisis and the mayor's response to the situation.

Staten Island's shelter spurs debate on Eric Adams' shifting position

The former St John Villa Academy has become a flashpoint in the debate over how the city is managing the influx of migrants.

Staten Island residents, who have been vocal opponents of the shelter, claim that City Hall has intensified its efforts to maintain the site despite a court battle over its usage.

Mayor Adams, who previously supported welcoming migrants, is now facing backlash for his perceived change in stance on the issue.

Scott Herkert, a resident in the area, criticized City Hall's lack of transparency, saying, "They're (City Hall) doing everything in secret, and when they do say something, it's all lies."

“We have a mayor who at one point was welcoming migrants in, who now says the migrant influx is going to destroy New York,” New York Post reported.

The situation at the former St John Villa Academy complex remains contentious.

Approximately 100 migrants are currently residing there, despite previous celebrations by island officials when a judge's order temporarily halted the city from filling the location with asylum seekers.

However, the city received a stay, allowing the shelter to remain open and operational.

NYC residents raise concerns over migrant crisis

Herkert expressed his frustration at the turn of events, stating, "Since the city filed its notice of appeal, it's not just back to business as usual, they've doubled or tripled down."

Another resident, Margie, who chose not to disclose her last name due to her government job, raised concerns about the condition of the facility and its financial implications.

She questioned whether the mayor's actions were politically motivated, saying, "I don't know if this is the mayor personally attacking Staten Island because it's a Republican borough."

“They are pumping money into a facility that is flooding and falling apart, and they have to bus them all out again if the court rules it shut down. The mayor has never come to the shelter to take a look.”

The migrant crisis continues to unfold, with more than 116,000 people arriving in the five boroughs over the past year.

Criticisms of Mayor Eric Adams' Mexico trip

Internet users were blunt in their criticism when they mocked Mayor Adams.

A user tweeted, "He's going on vacation. He's taking a paid vacation." Another added, "*tax payer funded vacation."

A third claimed, "ELECTION CYCLE ALWAYS BRINGS A TURN AROUND WITH DEMS, BUT ONLY TEMPORARILY UNTIL ITS OVER NYC Mayor Eric Adams goes to Mexico to tell migrants that the Big Apple is 'at capacity' after 122,000 arrived in the last year."

A fourth tweeted, "TOO FUCKING LATE FOR THAT NOW."

"NYC Mayor Eric Adams goes to Mexico to discuss migrants, says there is ‘no more room in New York’ Amazing how interested the Democrats have become with the illegal immigrant problems since they started coming to their cities, before that they claim there was no problem!" read a tweet.
