NSW Police rescued two children from heated car
Harrowing video from the scene showed police officers using a hammer and baton to smash open the front passenger side window of the Honda hatchback in a car park. The two children were soon rescued from the car and were examined by officers. “After attempts to unlock the vehicle were unsuccessful, police broke the window to gain access,” NSW Police said, according to 7 News. “Two children – aged one and four – were located inside the vehicle and were assessed at the scene.”
'It was certainly not cool'
Authorities said the driver, a young mother was interrogated after she rushed back to the car with her groceries to find it surrounded by police and onlookers. The witness who captured the dramatic incident on camera told Daily Mail that the Honda's driver was "clearly in shock with what she was seeing" after she returned to the scene. "It was certainly not "cool" in the parking garage so it is very dangerous to leave children alone in here," the witness said.
NSW police confirmed on Tuesday that charges against the mother have "not yet" been filed but she could be held accountable under the Children and Young Persons Care and Protection Act. If charged and convicted of failing to care for a child, she could face a maximum $22,000 fine or six months in prison. As per NSW laws, it is a criminal offense to leave a child or young person in their care inside a motor vehicle without proper supervision for such a period that the child becomes emotionally distressed or physically impaired and is guilty of an offense.
