This year, due to Covid-19, the inaugural committee of the White House was "strongly encouraging" people not to attend the event in person and to rather tune in to the live-stream. Overall, The Washington Post estimated that about 2,000 people will attend the event, including 200 "VIPs" or families of President-elect Joe Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris, congressional leadership and several diplomats.

While President Trump will not attend the event, many other high-profile leaders will be there, including former presidents Barack Obama, George W Bush and Bill Clinton, in addition to their wives and former First Ladies Michelle Obama, Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton. Celebrities including Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga are expected to perform.

The 25,000 National Guard troops coming into Washington are undergoing an FBI vetting process as officials worry about a potential inside attack on the Inauguration following the protest on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021. Five people were reported dead in the violence, including a cop.

There were 1.8 million attendees at Obama's 2009 inauguration and close to one million who attended his second in 2013, according to D.C. officials.
