A 22-year-old Virginia man whose social media features a photograph from the January 6 riot at the US Capitol was arrested near the Capitol complex on Sunday, January 17. Police said he was carrying three high-capacity magazines, 37 rounds of unregistered ammunition and a Glock 22 firearm.

Guy Berry was arrested from Gordonsville, Virginia, the DC police reported. The news was confirmed by his aunt, who stated that she was his primary caregiver when he was a child. His aunt said, "He’s one of those open-carry people,” and added, “I keep telling him Black men can’t walk around with guns on his hip, but he doesn’t believe me.”

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, Berry was walking in the 200 blocks of Massachusetts Avenue NE with a Glock 22 "clearly visible in a holster". Officers who stopped him "concluded" that he was not allowed to carry a handgun in DC, according to a police report provided to NPR. He was arrested for carrying a pistol without a license, possession of a large-capacity ammunition feeding device and unregistered ammunition.

His aunt said she saw Berry on January 6 and knows he was not at the Capitol during the protest. But she said that Berry often voiced pro-Donald Trump sentiments and “always carries his gun". When asked why he carried a gun, she said, “just because he can.”

On January 15, 2021, a similar arrest took place when a Virginia man, 31-year-old Wesley Allen Beeler allegedly tried to pass through a security checkpoint with an "unauthorized" non-governmental credential, unregistered handguns and more than 500 rounds of ammunition.

The areas around the US Capitol and the White House, as well as much of downtown Washington are under a severe and extensive lockdown following the January 6 breach, which resulted in the deaths of a Capitol police officer and four protesters. The Law enforcement agencies have warned of further violent protests on Sunday and through the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden on January 20, 2021, both in Washington and at state capitols.
