HBO's The Deuce hits an all-time low rating after news of third season renewal

Views have plummeted for HBO's porn saga right after producer David Simon announced a season renewal on Twitter. Should they take it as a hint?

HBO's The Deuce hits an all-time low rating after news of third season renewal

Just last week HBO announced it would be bringing back its porn saga 'The Deuce' for a third season. Producer David Simon took to Twitter to announce the news. "We're always conjuring the last scene before we write the first. So much the better when we work for people who allow us to consistently plan, arc and execute as intended," he said before thanking the network for letting them stay. "Thanks, @HBO, for the third and final season renewal and the chance for #thedeuce to tell its full story." Sadly, soon after the announcement, views for the show plummeted landing at a meager 0.1 rating with only 585,000 viewers. That begs the question, do the fans of the show even want it back? Are HBO and 'The Deuce' team milking a dead cow?

The loss of viewership is certainly appalling. It is a considerable dip if you compare this to its initial popularity in season 1. After its September 2017 premiere, the first episode received 830,000 viewers on HBO for its initial airing and an additional 342,000 viewers for its encore later that night. Cumulatively, through all platforms, the episode received 2.2 million viewers. For the second season, it started with a much lower number - 636,000 and the numbers have been falling with each consecutive episode. At a time like this, the decision by the network is certainly confusing.

So far this season, the storyline has been great. It's a good transition from the last season and has detailed insight into the way porn worked back in the 1970's. But the problem is, it is already feeling a tiny bit boring. Perhaps it is Franco's overdone Frankie or just the stagnancy in pace, but you can certainly feel the story needs to close this season. Although HBO is only bringing it back for one more season, it still does feel like a stretch.

There have been way too many shows in the past that have been brought back for seasons that no one wanted to see and they've almost never worked. A show as iconic as 'The Deuce' would do better with a crisp two seasons instead of a third without thought-provoking material.

Starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, 'The Deuce' follows the story of the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York’s Times Square from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s, exploring the rough-and-tumble world that existed there until the rise of HIV, the violence of the cocaine epidemic, and the renewed real estate market all ended the bawdy turbulence.
