HBO’s iconic and hit series 'Game of Thrones' has created a global fanbase of its own. It is one of the most epic historical period fantasy series that has won many Emmy awards as well. But very few people actually do know about how the channel and makers weren’t too keen on bringing another sequel fearing that it would be only a one-time wonder. Now that the ‘Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon’ is about to premiere globally on August 21, 2022, at HBO, the countless unused and scrapped prequel ideas that paved the way for this ‘GoT’ series have been revealed.

According to a report by Hollywood Reporter.com, ‘The War of the Five Pitches’ started almost six years back in July 2016. After deciding that season eight would be the final one for ‘Game of Thrones,’ which became one of the greatest and finest ever historical fiction saga series of all times, makers were very anxious about approving any prequel idea for the same fearing about people’s expectations and did not want to fail them. Talking about the same in an interview with Hollywood Reporter.com, HBO’s executive vice president for drama Francesca Orsi said, “I don’t think there was much confidence internally that Thrones was a franchise because the show was so big and so seminal. We saw it as an opportunity to keep telling great stories, but not necessarily to try and replace Game of Thrones as the most epic show in history.”

The Santa Fe-based Martin came to Los Angeles for meeting HBO executives. He initially gave two ideas. The first was a series based on his light-hearted ‘Dunk and Egg’ novellas, which followed a knight that wanders Westeros with a young squire. The second was called ‘The Dance of the Dragons,’ which narrated the immensely grueling civil war among Daenerys Targaryen’s ancestors that was an affair which ended up tearing apart Westeros 180 years before the events in Thrones. Talking about ‘Dance of the Dragons,’ Martin said, “Dance had all the intrigue, competition for the Iron Throne, murders, duels, big battles, 20 dragons — all of that stuff.”

Makers and HBO went through Martin’s works and compiled a list of fifteen possible prequel ideas for the ‘GoT’ franchise. Out of them, HBO rejected ‘Dunk and Egg.’ But, even when they liked Martin's ‘Dance of the Dragons’ idea and premise for the prequel series, they didn't react to it that much.

A series concept that sounds like a superhero team of Seven Gods of Westeros as actual people having adventures before being worshipped as gods got rejected by the channel. A script about the destruction of the ancient Targaryen empire of Valyria by Max Borenstein also didn't make it through.

A take on the Dornish warrior queen Nymeria by Oscar winner Brian Helgeland was also not approved by the channel. Aegon’s conquest of Westeros penned by Rand Ravich and Far Shariat sadly didn't make the cut. ‘Bloodmoon’ whose pilot had been shot had been shelved by the channel as well. ‘The Long Night and the age of Heroes' also didn't make it through. All these possible prequel ideas were being actively discussed by the 'Game of Thrones' makers and channel and finally did not get a breakthrough before they all finally decided to go ahead with Martin’s ‘The Dance of the Dragons’ which is now the prequel series ‘Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon.’

The tweet about the same was posted by an online news outlet, IGN. Post which, fans have been dropping their reactions and thoughts about the scrapped ideas with some of them liking it and some trashing the prequel series and lashing out at makers for the failure of the finale season of 'Game of Thrones.'
