LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Production giant Searchlight Pictures announced on Friday, December 9, that Taylor Swift will be donning the director’s hat for the first time as she gears up to direct her first-ever feature-length movie from a script that has been written by the musician. The news of Swift directing a movie has been met with mixed responses and people didn’t seem too thrilled with the announcement. However, the singer-songwriter has received some words of encouragement from one of the finest filmmakers of this generation, Guillermo Del Toro.

Del Toro is known for his unique filmmaking and how he uses the element of horror in almost all his movies. His movies have managed to create a lot of impact on people’s minds and a lot of young and aspiring filmmakers follow in his footsteps to make influential movies. It seems Del Toro is a big fan of Taylor Swift’s craft and believes that she is going to do well in her directing career.

While speaking in an interview with W Magazine, the 58-year-old Mexican filmmaker praised the ‘Midnights’ creator and noted that she’s very “articulate” about what she’s trying to do. The acclaimed director also revealed that they both met each other and had one of the most “stimulating” conversations ever.

“She’s a very accomplished director, she’s incredibly articulate and deep about what she’s trying to do—and what she will do. I have the greatest admiration for her; we had one of the most stimulating and gratifying conversations,” Del Toro said during the interview. Del Toro went on to say that he and Swift have “common interests” and gave her some books that inspired him for creating a movie like ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’.

“We have many common interests. Her interest in fable, myth, and fairy tales is quite deep. I gave the books that I thought would be interesting for her—among them a book that was useful for me in creating ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ called The Science of Fairy Tales,” the filmmaker said.

The filmmaker’s comments come a few days after the Grammy-winning artist told The Hollywood Reporter that she would love to switch places with ‘The Shape of Water’ filmmaker. The musician is a huge fan of Del Toro and praised him for having such an extraordinary “imagination” and “visual vocabulary.”

She added, “To have such a diverse storytelling range but to somehow put your distinctive artistic fingerprint on every film. And yet, it feels like he’s still so curious and enthusiastic about his work. I can only imagine that a day in his mind would be fascinating.”

Swift recently became the first-ever solo artist to win two directing awards at the 2022 VMAs. She has already tried her hands at acting, but unfortunately, both of her movies, ‘Cats’ and ‘Amsterdam’, were bombed at the box office. It would be interesting to see what kind of project she’ll be helming.

As far as Del Toro is concerned, his latest film ‘Pinocchio’ is receiving universal acclaim and is being touted as one of the frontrunners to win the Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards.

‘Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio’ is currently streaming on Netflix.
