'Grey's Anatomy' Season 17: Who is Cormac Hayes? 5 reasons why Meredith and he should be endgame and not MerLuca

Is it time for Meredith to go on a date with McWidow?

For the diehard 'Grey's Anatomy' lovers, there's only one person for Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and that's Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). But Derek died in a car crash (and left the show, toodles!) so Meredith and the rest of the MerDer were left to pick up the pieces. Since that fateful episode in Season 11, the showrunners have done their best to make Meredith move on, and these efforts have only been partly successful. Meredith tried to move on with the obnoxious Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson), with rather miserable results, as his former lover turned up again in his life.

Then, Meredith seemed to have found peace Andrew DeLuca, and there was much heated Italian exchange. Despite ups and downs, Meredith admitted to him that she loved him, and since, he has been the only person she has confessed to loving after Derek. He even went to jail for her, *sniffles*.

But the Grey paradise turned gray, as problems kept cropping up in Season 16, despite the fact that DeLuca took the fall for Meredith and almost went to jail. They had several fights, and it hurt DeLuca when Meredith said that their relationship won't survive if he was allowed to be a surgeon, and her medical license was taken away. DeLuca felt that she didn't respect him at all. And then, DeLuca was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, with only Meredith to help him. Into this set of complications, in walked the handsome Irish doctor, Cormac Hayes (Richard Flood) sent by Meredith's best friend Cristina Yang. He was, matter-of-fact, abrupt, and didn't hesitate in telling the truth to his patients, even though they might not want to hear it. This led to a few arguments between Meredith and him, but they finally saw each other eye-to-eye as Season 16 progressed.

It has been hinted that there *could* be a romance brewing between the two of them in the future, but...you never know. Hayes could just be the second-perfect fit for Meredith, as they both have broken pasts and this seems to bring them together. Many viewers think it would be exciting to see them together. So, here's why we would prefer Hayes and Meredith together, over MerLuca.

Dark pasts

(ABC)

Both Meredith and Hayes have had the brutal experience of losing the ones they love, and they're able to connect better due to this troubling similarity. They've both lost their partners in devastating ways and have had to reconstruct their whole worlds again, as well as reinvent themselves psychologically.

Chemistry?

(ABC)

There seems to be an intense and heated chemistry between the two of them. Fans of this ship are just waiting for it to explode into... something more? They're more annoyed with the way DeLuca has been treating Meredith and thinks that it is time she gets her due.

The relationship isn't going anywhere with DeLuca

(ABC)

MerLuca has stayed stagnant for quite a while, and while Meredith is taking care of him, she needs someone to check on her too. It's uncertain whether MerLuca can ever return, so maybe she should really try giving McIrish a chance, and see where that goes? They've already shared several bonding moments over the season and we're excited to know whether anything is coming from that.

Cristina-approved

(ABC)

Cristina knows her best friend more than anyone else....so she would have made the right decision for Meredith too. When has Cristina ever been wrong? Wait... don't answer that.

Not much in common with DeLuca

(ABC)

Meredith loves DeLuca for sure, but they don't have much in common. He doesn't quite get the complexity of all the trauma she has gone through in her life. Moreover, for the most part, he was a doormat. Hayes is everything DeLuca isn't, and they might make a really good fit.

'Grey's Anatomy' will return on November 12, ABC Thursdays at 9 pm.
