'Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 16: Loved ones dying, a plane crash, getting fired twice and now jail; stop punishing Meredith Grey, writers!

Meredith Grey has been through hell and back in 'Grey's Anatomy'. Here's a look at what the protagonist has had to go through in the course of 16 seasons on the show

It's astounding how Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) is still in one piece after 16 grueling years on the show with the writers unapologetically punishing their own protagonist.

In the latest episode, Meredith was told that she was going to jail as she had missed out on her court appointment. To be fair, Mer had a good reason — her daughter Zola had to go through surgery.

In the promo for the next episode, our star-surgeon is seen toiling in jail, and getting spooked by fellow inmates. She tries asking the guard whether she could go and get her kids ready for Halloween,  and he just takes a dig at her.

Meredith can never have peace, can she? Through the 16 years of 'Grey’s Anatomy', the character has gone through innumerable trials and tribulations. Here are just a few of them. Clearly, being fired more than two times in the show was not enough.

Deaths of loved ones

Meredith lost her sister Lexie (Chyler Leigh) in a heart-stopping plane crash. Yes, that episode gives us the shivers still. She has had to unplug Derek (Patrick Dempsey) from life support after a terrible car accident.

Before that, in season six, she watched Derek being shot. She has seen her close friend George dying. Her mother Ellis Grey died, and then seasons later, she watched her father die.

How does one hold it together, after all that? Ask Meredith.

Christina leaving

Whenever Meredith thinks of the bad events in her life, there is a montage of memories that come to her mind, including the plane crash, Derek's death, and Christina leaving.

Christina Yang was Meredith's person, and sure she left for better and bigger things (as actress Sandra Oh left the show) but it still hurts to say goodbye to your best friend.

Beaten up by a patient

In  season 12, Meredith was attacked by a patient, who was not aware of what he was doing. She was thrashed and beaten up to the extent that she could not even talk for weeks.

Bomb blasts, plane crashes and drowning

Meredith is a magnet for trouble, and sometimes willingly so! In season two, Meredith puts her hand on a bomb cavity, to stop it from exploding. Of course, the bomb expert who finally took it burst into smithereens right in front of her.

In season three, Meredith was knocked into the water and decided not to swim and would have drowned had Derek not saved her.

And then there is the terrible plane crash of season eight, where she lost both Lexie and Mark. Barely five seasons later, she finds herself in another unnerving plane ride.

And now she's in jail. Writers, stop punishing Meredith Grey! She's suffered enough.
