NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: In a historic move, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled in favor of judges addressing people by their preferred pronouns during court sessions. It is the first state to take such a step toward a more inclusive environment in the court of law.

Fox News' resident comedian and late-night show host Greg Gutfeld spoke up against the ruling in a segment during his Friday, September 29, episode. He called the ruling a 'scary' step which could affect how court proceedings will now turn out.

Michigan judges asked to use preferred pronouns

The Michigan Supreme Court took a major step toward courtroom inclusivity by asking judges to adhere to the preferred pronouns or any other means accepted by each involved party, as per Bridge Michigan. Out of the seven judges at the apex court, five voted in favor of the ruling.

This ruling applies to both on-ground court proceedings and any paperwork done by the judges that addresses the said parties, which would include the attorneys and their respective clients.

The pronouns will include they/them and a judge or any other court staff can otherwise choose to refer to concerned parties by their names as well. Judges who are found to have gone against the rules can face any kind of punishment from reprimand to removal from the bench.

The rule will officially take effect from January 1, 2024, in every court of the state.

Greg Gutfeld questions court's ruling

Gutfeld, besides his association with Fox News, is known for being seriously critical of progressive thought and action related to gender and sexuality. He went on to criticize the Michigan Suprme Court's ruling on his late-night show 'Gutfeld!'.

"This trans-madness has gone from the girls' bathroom to the courtroom," Gutfeld said.

He also suggested that this ruling could end up assisting perpetrators in getting easy access to women's prisons. Gutfeld has consistently attacked the inclusion of trans women in women's prisons, arguing that it leads to rapes and sexual assaults.

"For the perp, this they/them is the perfect legal strategy," the Fox News host said. "If you win, you walk out a free man. But if you lose, you get to go to a women's prison."

He also claimed, "This is kinda scary to me because there's no science behind this. This is all based on people demanding things and a courtroom should be immune to this."
