'Arrow' fans would love to see a Green Lantern spinoff but aren't too keen on 'Green Arrow and the Canaries'
'Arrow' might be ending after the ongoing eighth season but its spirit will live on in a spinoff show, 'Green Arrow and the Canaries', that will be focusing on Mia Smoak (Katherine McNamara), Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy), and Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) and will be set in the year 2040. The spinoff series has reportedly already begun filming its pilot episode but not all of the fans are quite keen on seeing Mia's future world explored on screen.
"We barely got to know the future children while they are young and now all of a sudden we are supposed to like them," 'Arrow' fan u/TirelessGuardian wrote on Reddit. "They feel forced and I don’t like them. That whole AJ refusing to give up on his brother yet his brother trying to prove his evil doesn’t mean anything to us because we haven’t gotten to invest in the characters yet. It worked with John and his brother because John is a developed character."
However, even though the 2040 spinoff has had a mixed response, fans are hopeful that a Green Lantern spinoff starring John Diggle (David Ramsey) might be worked out at some point. Speculations about John becoming GL have intensified after Season 8's second episode revealed that John's wife Lyla Michaels (Audrey Marie Anderson) is working for the cosmic entity known as the Monitor (LaMonica Garrett).
Some fans have even begun to theorize how the Green Lanterns and their associated Lantern corps could be introduced to the Arrowverse, possibly using the Book of Destiny or some such reality-bending device. In the comics, many heroes have become members of at least one of the Lantern Corps, with Barry Allen's transformation into a Blue Lantern being particularly favored by fans, and viewers are hopeful that these characters could be brought into The CW's Arrowverse at some point. Here are some of the suggestions that have been made:
"She tells him he has to use the book to create a ring for him so he can save himself but then he has to deal with the guardians yelling at him that he not allowed to keep the ring so he has to prove himself to them." - u/TirelessGuardian
"They could do it in short bursts? Maybe have little origin stories for all the different corps? Imagine a whole episode around Dex-Starr! Or Larfleeze!" - u/BornAshes
"I'd love to start with green and blue. Start with a semi broken green ring. Then they find a fully broken blue. It somehow helps green still" - u/Mighty_thor_confused
While the special effects necessary to pull off a good Green Lantern story may be too expensive to manage on a TV budget, fans are still hopeful that the character could at least get a cameo in 'Crisis on Infinite Earths'. If a Green Lantern show does end up going into production, we're keeping our fingers crossed hoping it doesn't end up like Ryan Reynolds' spectacularly terrible movie adaptation of the character.
'Arrow' Season 8 Episode 3 will be airing on The CW October 29 and 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' will begin with a 'Supergirl' episode airing on December 8 and end with an episode of 'DC's Legend of Tomorrow' January 14.
