Donald Trump took to Twitter to congratulate himself on a job well done after reports showed that unemployment had surprisingly fallen despite a coronavirus pandemic that has, so far, resulted in record job losses.

The Daily Mail reported that the percentage of jobless Americans had fallen to 13.3 percent and that employment figures had risen by 2.5 million in May despite widespread predictions from experts that the economy would continue to suffer in May.

Economists had predicted that the Labor Department report released on Friday, June 5, would reveal that the unemployment rate had increased to 20 percent and that a total of eight million jobs had been lost.

However, defying all expectations, the department's monthly employment report showed that the jobless rate had dropped to 13.3 percent in May compared to 14.7 percent in April. Nonfarm payrolls had risen by 2.5 million jobs after a record plunge of 20.6 million the previous month as well.

Following the release of the figures, the president immediately took to Twitter to pat himself on the back and to announce that he would be holding a press conference to address the upturn in fortunes.

"Really Big Jobs Report. Great going President Trump (kidding but true)!" he said in his first tweet, which already has close to 100,000 likes and 16,000 retweets.

"THESE NUMBERS ARE INCREDIBLE!" he said in a second, before tagging Maria Bartiromo, the Fox Business News host who recently interviewed him. "I am so stunned. I’ve never seen numbers like this and I’ve been doing this for 30 years!"

"This is an AMAZING JOBS REPORT! Edward Lawrence," he wrote in a third, tagging the Fox Business journalist.

Trump went on to say he will be holding a news conference at 'on the Jobs Numbers!', before adding, "Congratulations to wonderful Charles Payne on having been so optimistic, and therefore correct. Market up BIG!!!" Payne is a Fox Business Network contributor.

The release of the report saw the Dow jump by 700 points and in his conference, Trump said the news was an affirmation of all the work we've been doing" over the course of his administration.

He also said that earlier predictions of unprecedented job losses were "the greatest miscalculation in the history of business shows" and compared the country to a "body" that was "strong" but needed an operation before becoming the "rocketship" it was now.

The economy was not the only issue the president talked about in a rambling speech that also included a brag about the progress on the coronavirus vaccine, said the Green New Deal was "baby talk," criticized governors continuing the lockdown, and said his poll numbers are "looking really good."

Trump also took the time to address the George Floyd protests that had broken out across the country and urged governors to call in the National Guard to control the situation in their respective states.

"Call me, we'll be ready for them so fast their heads will spin," he promised.
