'Grantchester' Season 5 Episode 5: Will Davenport faces secrets past and guilt over deaths of two young men
'Grantchester' Season 5 Episode 5 sees Will Davenport (Tom Brittney) unexpectedly get entangled into the death of two young men who work out at the same gym. One of them is the black student Michael, who Will had met when he had investigated a death in an all-women's university earlier in the season. The death seems to be caused after a boxing match that went wrong. However, Will feels that there is something suspicious about the circumstances of the death of these two young men.
The promo video of the episode sees Will point out the same to Geordie (Robson Green) who ends up investigating the death. He wonders if someone had intentionally locked the men up inside the gym. These two men are the ones who had a match scheduled earlier in the day and Geordie and Will had even watched the two of them have a fight. So why would someone want to kill two young men?
While investigating this case, Geordie realizes that Will is holding onto some secrets that he is not even ready to share with his partner. What secret would hold so much power over our resident vicar? That is something that the episode will delve into further. Then there is also Will's relationship with journalist Elle Harding (Lauren Carse).
The promo also sees Elle approach Will, but he gives her the cold shoulder and she responds with an expression that hints at the situation being unbelievable. She also wonders how long Will can last the way he is, as she understands that there is more to his reaction than just disinterest. This in combination with the secret that Will is hiding makes the penultimate episode of the season something to watch out for.
Then, there is the matter of Mrs. C's (Tessa Peake-Jones) difference of opinion with her husband. Turns out it is only becoming bigger, and the rift between Mrs. C and her husband is growing. She would probably be unable to trust him again after how he betrayed her confidence in the past and used her. She is featured in the promo, as she explains that her husband has made too many mistakes for her to be able to forgive.
A separate scene from the upcoming episode was also shared, in which we see Will, Geordie and Leonard stand in a queue to enter the boxing stadium. This scene sees Leonard ask of Geordie how his mother-in-law is and the exasperated expression on Geordie's face proves that there is a conflict ready to blast sooner than later.
