'Grantchester' Episode 2 begins with a shining shot of Reverend William Davenport (Tom Brittney) riding his bike to meet his mother, Amelia (Jemma Redgrave), and her new beau, Syngen. Will is reserved about this relationship as he notices a disturbing practice of this man controlling his mother without her even realizing the fact. The fact that Syngen addresses his mother as Amy, instructs her to do things and has her obey with no reservations had Will seething with fury. However, all of this is well-hidden until he begins punching the sandbag at his gym. That is Will's outlet to all of his pent-up frustration. That and ranting to Leonard (Al Weaver) while they walk the dog.

It is during one such walk that Will and Leonard witness a hit-and-run. Geordie (Robson Green) concludes that this is a murder, cloaked as a hit-and-run, and investigates with Will's help. Turns out, the fancy car, which is a Morris 8, is owned by a local family. The family is related to Dickie Ester and Harry Grey, the tough man who owns the car has bad blood with Dickie. Turns out Dickie was bleeding Grey's brother John dry of his savings and was close to cheating the brother out of his equity on their house as well. However, Grey found this out on time and he threw his cousin Dickie out of their home. Grey also seems to be a bully who orders his brother around and when Geordie and Will arrive at their house after tracking down the car, the two are certain that the brothers have a connection to Dickie's death.

But are they on the right track? On the surface, one looks like the bully and the other the victim. However, upon further investigation, Geordie and Will learn the brother is not a bully but a mediator. He keeps John's episodes and temper tantrums under control and he loves his brother dearly. The episode revolves around this crime but the more interesting plot point turns out to be how Leonard comes to the decision that what Mrs C doesn't know, doesn't hurt her.

Despite promising Daniel (Oliver Dimsdale) that things between them will stay platonic, he makes a move and plants a kiss; asks Daniel to stay the night. He is calm, collected, and even enjoys the bliss of the morning after spooning with his lover, that is until Mrs C arrives. All the resolve that he had built over the night quickly disappears and he seeks out Will's help to get him out of this sitch. This dynamic between Will, Mrs C and Leonard is one of the interesting relationship dynamics in the show. More than the crimes that Will and Geordie investigate, it is these relationships and the progression within them that we see, which is more intriguing.

Geordie and Cathy's home is also turning into a source of conflict as Cathy's mother pervades through their lives. She takes over the home completely and while Geordie enjoys the fact that someone is taking care of him, Cathy is under pressure. This pressure of being a let down for her mother, that fact that her work does not matter to the man she married or her mother is going to push Geordie and Cathy apart. More of how their relationship unravels is something that we will see in the upcoming episode.
