LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In a recent episode of 'Late Night with Seth Meyers,' the late-night talk show host took a critical stance on former President Donald Trump's endorsement of Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan for Speaker of the House.
Meyers dissected the situation with his signature wit, shedding light on the potential implications of such a move.
"Trump has endorsed one of the most pro-MAGA members of the Republican Party, Ohio congressman Jim Jordan, to be the next Speaker of the House, which could put one of the most prominent supporters of the coup attempt on January 6th in charge of the chamber."
The late-night host's critique was delivered in his "A Closer Look" segment, which has become known for its humorous yet insightful analysis of current events.
Meyers referred to recent reports from ABC News, revealing that Trump had secretly maneuvered to become Speaker of the House in January.
"And apparently the reason he did that was because he was angry he wasn't getting more votes during the initial rounds of voting," said Meyers
Meyers' hilarious take on Trump's failed bid for speaker
Publicly, Trump had endorsed Kevin McCarthy for Speaker, but behind the scenes, he was exploring ways to secure the position for himself. This maneuvering stemmed from his frustration at not garnering more votes during the initial rounds of voting.
Meyers humorously imagined the exchanges between Trump and his allies during this period, suggesting that the former President might have texted Fox News host Sean Hannity with urgency.
The late-night host then delved into the details of Trump's bid for Speaker. In the seventh round of voting, "Trump became angry and he actually reached out, contacted Gaetz, made his views known within a small circle of Republicans that the only reason he only got one vote".
However, Trump's efforts proved futile again, as he received only a single vote after Gaetz's nomination.
Jim Jordan: 'The most popular Republican congressman on Fox News'
Meyers cleverly used this failed bid for Speaker to shed light on Trump's abandonment of the endeavor and his subsequent endorsement of Jim Jordan.
Meyers humorously depicted Jordan as a frequent guest on Fox News, "He sounds like an auctioneer with a head injury, just repeating all the unhinged buzzwords you hear on Fox News without any of the content.
"It's like if Thanksgiving dinner, everyone in your family had a time limit to speak. 'Uncle Jerry, what are you thankful for?' 'Well, I guess I'm thankful for my health and continued efforts to stop trans, woke, Benghazi, Whitewater, China, laptop, Hunter e-mails, tan suit.'"
"And it makes sense that Jordan would spew random Fox News talking points because he is far and away the most popular Republican congressman on Fox News."
He further added, "Since August 2017...565 times. I don't even think I've appeared on this show 565 times since 2017. In fairness, we did have that stretch where I was replaced by a guest host. Who was that again? Oh, damn it! He's everywhere. On the bright side, it only took him about 90 seconds to get through "A Closer Look." And when he does go on Fox News, it won't surprise you to learn he doesn't make all that much sense".
He also played a clip of Jordan making vague statements about the American people's thirst and hunger for leadership, evoking laughter from his audience.
The late-night host concluded by emphasizing the dangers of Jim Jordan's association with Trump's efforts to overturn American democracy.
He pointed out that Trump's endorsement of Jordan signifies that the GOP is still under Trump's influence, and a vote for Jordan is essentially a vote for Trump's agenda.
Reactions to Seth Meyers' hilarious take on Jim Jordan's speaker bid
As Meyers dissected the situation with his signature wit, viewers across the internet chimed in with their own reactions to the absurdity of the situation.
One YouTube commenter humorously pointed out, "Congress has been a circus, so it makes sense the GOP would want the biggest clown".
Another comment expressed exasperation, "This is ridiculous madness to even consider Jim Jordan as Speaker of the House. House Republicans are not in the slightest bit interested in doing anything at all that helps the American people. This is a joke".
"You might also remember him (Jordan) as the guy who looks away when terrible crimes are committed by his friends. And that's what his supporters are counting on him to continue doing," one user replied
"These guys are so crazy I wish it was the people who could pick the speaker. If Jim gets in, I swear there is no hope for US," another user commented
"If Gym Jordan gets the speaker, they will have to turn the podium 180 degrees so he can continue to look the other way," another wrote.
