Golden Globes 2020: Tom Hanks wins Cecil B. DeMille Award and fans say 'the world deserves more idols like him'
The 77th annual Golden Globe Awards not only presented trophies to some of the best movies and TV shows this year but also had iconic lifetime achievement honorees. After Ellen DeGeneres won the Carol Burnett Award for her outstanding contribution to television, Tom Hanks was awarded the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award.
The award honors actors for their "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment." The actor, who is a recipient of eight Golden Globe Awards and two Academy Awards, received the accolade for nearly 40 years of contribution to the entertainment industry and made a remarkable speech.
The 63-year-old actor said, “There’s an undeniable power that you just have to say, ‘Hey, I did work that was good enough that ended up touching people on a very personal level,’ ” and added, “Because I think we all remember what we were going through — what our circumstances [were] — was it sort of like what we needed at the time when we saw films that actually made us feel better about who we are.”
Hanks made his big-screen debut in the 1980 film 'He Knows You're Not Alone' and followed it with super hit films such as 'Philadelphia', 'Sleepless in Seattle', 'Forrest Gump', 'Apollo 13', 'Saving Private Ryan', 'The Green Mile' and 'Cast Away'.
Fans couldn't help but express their joy after Hanks won the award. "Such a wholesome man Tom is. With all these depressing events happening, the world deserves more idols like him, to be entertained. It would make it a better place. Thanks, Tom," one fan wrote and another said, "So happy for him, been a fan of his since I was a kid and forever will be he deserves this award for his hard work congrats Tom #goldenglobes."
“The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is proud to bestow the 2020 Cecil B. DeMille Award to Tom Hanks,” HFPA president Lorenzo Soria said in a statement. “For more than three decades, he’s captivated audiences with rich and playful characters that we’ve grown to love and admire. As compelling as he is on the silver screen, he’s equally so behind the camera as a writer, producer and director," the statement said praising the actor.
