Golden Globes 2020: '1917' beats 'Irishman', 'Joker', and 'Marriage Story' for Best Picture and leaves Twitter divided

After a surprising turn of events, Sam Mendes' World War I drama '1917' beat three Netflix entries — Martin Scorsese's 'The Irishman', Noah Baumbach's 'Marriage Story', Fernando Meirelles' 'The Two Popes' — and what could be deemed the biggest fan favourite, Todd Phillips' super villain drama 'Joker'.

The epic war film follows two young British soldiers during the peak of World War I as they try to deliver a message about an ambush. The movie was directed and produced by Sam Mendes and starred George MacKay, Dean-Charles Chapman, Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Claire Duburcq, with Colin Firth, and Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead roles.

'1917', which was only released last week, was thrust into the nominations alongside 'The Irishman', 'Joker', and 'Marriage Story', which were released weeks and months in advance.

This is the main reason that many on Twitter thought the movie robbed its competition of due recognition. "OMG. The worse 70mm mess. For starters, you could not even understand the dialogue for the fake, thick British accents. This is another 'Green Book' moment — if u know what I mean! Green Book was bland but won Academy," pointed out a fan.

Fans noted that movies like 'The Irishman', 'Joker', 'The Two Popes' and 'Marriage Story' had put in time and energy at the box office over the last few months and the new entry of '1917' to the race makes its win unfair. "Not sure how it can win this award when the majority of the populace, haven’t been able to see it."

But the accolades for the movie did not stop here as filmmaker Mendes won the award for the best director for '1917'.

Even as fans criticised '1917', they did find director Sam Mendes' win just. "Mendes’s directing saved a weak, meaningless script that not even the two soldiers could salvage. Trust me you will love only the filming and sound of 1917. The story sucked lol," said a fan.

Now with the Golden Globes battle won and lost, fans are gearing up for how Oscars and Critics Choice Awards will pan out.

"This year's @goldenglobes proves that @netflix promised so much but achieved so little; none won Best Drama. Big blow for #TheIrishman. With #OnceUponATimeInHollywood, @1917 and #ParasiteMovie winning, the @CriticsChoice and #Oscars will be interesting. Still up for grabs."
