'Gold Rush: White Water' Season 3 Episode 3 promo shows bear attack camp, Dustin hands new recruit James Hamm a gun

Already the Chilkat range is a harsh terrain to survive. But when you put bears in that equation, things get worse. We also see in the promo that their equipment may be in trouble. We see smoke coming out of one of the dredges. That’s not a good sign, especially in the middle of nowhere

‘Gold Rush: White Water’ season three has already seen a lot of friction. In the first episode of the Discovery Channel docu-series, we saw Dustin Hurt having a go at his best friend Paul Richardson about his fiance Kayla (who happens to be Dustin’s step-sister).

Dustin felt a gold-hunting mission was no place to bring wives or girlfriends, a thoroughly sexist notion, that ultimately led to a falling out between the two. In the second episode, we saw Dustin’s father ‘Dakota’ Fred almost cause a mutiny with his micromanagement, impatience and general rudeness.

While ‘Dakota’ Fred may have tried to justify it by saying he had no patience for slacking or mistakes, it was obvious the others in his crew felt he was being unfair. So what can we expect from the third episode? Definitely more friction.

In the promo for episode three, we see Ryan Cardoza, a new member of ‘Dakota’ Fred’s crew looking unhappy. We hear another new member, who hasn’t been introduced yet, say, “He has a people problem.” And Cardoza’s face is shown along with that comment.

This looks grim for ‘Dakota’ Fred, whose team is already unhappy about how things are run. But it also feels out of character for Ryan, who so far, has been willing to be flexible. Even with Fred’s grumpiness, Ryan was more than willing to forgive. But if that comment was directed at Fred, it makes more sense.

But it’s not only personal relationships that may be at stake here. It could be actual dangers. Already the Chilkat range is a harsh terrain to survive. But when you put bears in that equation, things get worse. In the promo, we see a bear attacking their camp. We also see Dustin handing James Hamm, a new recruit, a gun.

And bears are definitely a problem in Alaska. According to the state’s Department of Fish and Game, an estimated 100,000 black bears (Ursus americanus) inhabit Alaska. And they aren’t the only ones. The state is also home to grizzly bears, Kodiak bears and even polar bears.

We also see in the promo that their equipment may be in trouble. We see smoke coming out of one of the dredges. That’s not a good sign, especially in the middle of nowhere, far away from civilization.

Between all of this, however, is the most crucial question: will they find gold? Both Dustin and ‘Dakota’ Fred’s crews have found some luck so far. But are their lucky streaks going to continue or were these just one-off incidents? From the look of Carlos Minor, Dustin’s best diver, we can be sure that at least Dustin and his crew will find some more of the precious metal.

‘Gold Rush: White Water’ airs on The Discovery Channel every Sunday at 10 p.m. ET.
