Who is George Dodson? Navy sailor kills wife with hammer, sets house afire with 1-yr-old baby inside
NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT: A 23-year-old Navy sailor has been charged with murder after his wife was found dead and a 13-month-old child was found injured at a fire scene in New London Wednesday night, July 20. According to court documents, Dodson told police he killed his wife with a hammer and then set the house in Connecticut on fire.
The accused, identified as George Dodson, has been charged with murder, criminal attempt at murder, criminal attempt at arson murder, first-degree arson, risk of injury to a minor, tampering with evidence, cruelty to animals, and reckless endangerment, as reported by WTNH.
On the day of the incident, a 911 call was made around 10:32 pm reporting a possible fire at a home on Sherman Street, police said. Firefighters started working to extinguish the fire and found the woman with life-threatening injuries and removed her from the home. The 23-year-old victim was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The baby boy was rescued from a crib in a second-floor bedroom and was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Police said his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The family also had two dogs that managed to escape the blaze and are currently missing, police told to NBC.

The police have labeled this as a domestic violence incident as the court documents show Dodson accepting his actions. New London police Capt. Matthew Galante told News 8, "One life lost is one too many and this is a tragic event within the New London community. The only thing I can say to the public at this point is this does not appear to be a random act, and it appears to be an isolated incident, domestic related.” Dodson appeared in court in front of Judge Kevin Shay on Thursday afternoon, July 21, and is now being held on a $3 million cash surety bond.
Who is George Dodson?
Dodson has been a member of the U.S. Navy for five years, according to Navy spokesperson Lt. Seth Koenig. He has been based in Connecticut for about three years, as per information provided by Lt. Koenig said to NBC. Dodson is a second-class petty officer and works as an electronics technician for nuclear, according to Lt. Koenig. "His status in the military has not yet changed, but it is too early to determine what the next steps are for the Navy," he said.

The court documents obtained by the news publication reveal that Dodson told a paramedic, "I did this, I killed her. When asked why he killed her, he said, “Jealousy. We opened up our relationship, and she found another man she loved more and I could not stand the thought of it so I killed her.”
Dodson then told police he killed his wife with a hammer. The court documents also state that Dodson's initial plan was to kill his wife by setting her on fire. He was also confronted about the potential danger that the baby was put in and if any harm was inflicted on him, to which he said, "I started the fire, so yes. I didn’t harm him directly, but.”
