An affidavit by the actor's solicitor states that Rush suffered "tremendous emotional and social hardship" since the publication of articles by the Daily Telegraph in 2017.

Rush was accused of lewd and inappropriate behavior towards a colleague while working on a production of 'King Lear' in the year 2015. Rush is suing the Sydney newspaper as well as the journalist Jonathon Moran for defamation.

Speaking at a press conference in Melbourne then, he said, "The hyperbole, lies and the spurious claims about me in the entertainment community. They have splashed spurious claims with bombastic titles on their front pages."

"This has created irreparable damage to my reputation, which has been extremely hurtful to my wife, daughter, and my son, as well as to my extended family and many colleagues in the film, television and theatre industries. This situation is intolerable and I must now seek vindication of my good name through the courts in Australia," the actor continued.

In response to the case filed against the Daily Telegraph, editor Chris Dore said, "The Daily Telegraph accurately reported the Sydney Theatre Company received a complaint alleging that Mr. Geoffrey Rush had engaged in inappropriate behavior. We will defend our position in court."

Following the accusations, Rush stepped down as the president of the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts. His resignation was done in order to protect and prevent his colleagues from being linked to the allegations.

The actor continues to deny all the allegations that were made against him.
