'Game of Thrones' season 8 episode 3 stills see war coming to Winterfell as Sansa, Varys and Tyrion wait in the crypts

While the army are assembled on the frontline to face off with the dead, the others wait in the crypts, perhaps strategizing

Episode 3 of 'Game of Thrones' season 8 will finally see the Great War begin, and this time the Night King is riding an ice-breathing dragon, searching for Bran Stark who claimed himself the last living memory of humanity. Bran's watchful instinct to warg into any creature and keep an eye on events all over has made him immediate prey for the Night King, who has returned after almost a thousand years to turn humans into living dead.

HBO recently released the pictures for Episode 3 Wednesday, and they are all an unhinging reminder of the war which will be fought between the living and the dead:

1. Jon Snow/Aegon Targaryen faces death

Jon Snow finds himself in the middle of a bloody war. (HBO)

Jon Snow will inevitably be the Night King's favorite rival in this battle as the two have met on several occasions over the last seven seasons. A picture clearly depicts the newly identified Targaryen's fear in the face of death, and the fading background might just hint at his presence in the middle of the battlefield.

2. One last time

Daenerys and Jon watch Winterfell prepare for war. (HBO)

Chances are this image was taken in the scene immediately after Jon's confession about his identity to Daenerys. The two are seen standing on atop gazing at Winterfell, which is lit up with torches to warn of the coming of the White Walkers.

3. The crypts of Winterfell

Tyrion and Lord Varys hide in the crypts of Winterfell. (HBO)

Other than the ones who have taken up the responsibility of stopping the White Walkers, Lord Varys and Tyrion have joined the rest to stay in the crypts of Winterfell. The crypts might just have a significant role to play in the upcoming battle, and by the look on Tyrion's face, it seems he is up to something.

4. The War of the Knights

Brienne and Jaime lead the army in the war. (HBO)

The Kingslayer, Jaime, and the newly knighted Ser Brienne of Tarth seem to be leading the army in the Great War. It is only fair these two fight on the same line as that would mark the perfect end to their multiple seasons-long journey. Chances are Jaime Lannister might just fight his last war here.

5. Sansa Stark awaits

Sansa waits for the war to get over. (HBO)

With Lord Varys, Tyrion and some others, Sansa takes refuge in the crypts and from her expression, it seems she is not really approving of whatever conversation is going on. On the other hand, with Arya and Jon being out at war, Sansa might also be worried if the war will be won.

'Game of Thrones' season 8 episode 3, returns to HBO April 28.
