Nichole Schmidt was awarded $3M in Gabby Petito’s wrongful death lawsuit

Petito was reported missing on September 11, 2021, during a cross-country trip with her fiance that began on July 2, 2021. Her remains were later discovered near Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming on September 19, 2021, and it was revealed that she died from strangulation. The disappearance and killing of Petito garnered widespread attention and sparked a sensational manhunt for Laundrie.

The search came to an end after Laundrie’s skeletal remains were found in the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park on October 20, 2021. In January 2022, the FBI revealed that Laundrie admitted to killing Petito in a notebook that was found near his body. Laundrie’s family released the full notebook entry in June 2022 which showed the former confessing “I ended her life” in writing.

Petito’s parents, Joe and Nicole, sued Laundrie’s parents for “intentional infliction of emotional distress” after it was revealed that Laundrie confessed to murdering their daughter before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The lawsuit filed in March 2022 claimed that Chris and Roberta Laundrie were aware that their son had murdered his fiancee but decided not to act. In November 2022, a judge in Sarasota County, Florida, ruled in favor of Petito’s family in a wrongful death lawsuit filed against the Laundrie’s estate. As per the final judgment, $3 million was awarded to Schmidt as the administrator of Petito’s estate, CNN reported.
