MOAB, UTAH: As the two-year anniversary of Gabby Petito's death approaches in just a few months, her family has uploaded a devastating video of their daughter, encouraging viewers to "be kind." The video was uploaded on TikTok via theGabby Petito Foundation's official page, which is operated by the late 22-year-old’s parents, Joseph Petito and Nichole Schmidt.
Petito's fiance, Brian Laundrie, killed himself in the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park, close to the Laundries' house in North Port, Florida, on or around August 28, 2021. What is the latest update on Petito's case?
In the latest update, court documents revealed a letter Brian's mother wrote to her son "references bringing a shovel to help bury a body and baking a cake with a shiv" if Brian was imprisoned. The family of Gabrielle Petito contended in a court document filed on May 5 that "A reasonable inference is that the letter was written at a time when Gabrielle Petito was as yet unburied, and Brian Laundrie could go to jail for the crime of murder."
'I never would have fathomed the events'
This is the most recent update in a protracted legal battle between the two families that is still taking place in a civil court in Sarasota, Florida. The famous "burn after reading" letter that Roberta Laundrie wrote to her son has been a source of contention for the Petito family. Brian's mother opened up about the undated letter in a March affidavit that stated in part, "While I used words that seem to have a connection with Brian’s actions and his taking of Gabby’s life, I never would have fathomed the events that unfolded months later between Brian and Gabby would reflect the words in my letter."
'Frankly unbelievable'
The Petito family disagrees with that interpretation of the letter, which their attorneys described as "frankly unbelievable." "If the jury were to find that letter was written after Gabrielle Petito’s murder, if is further proof that the Laundries and Bertolino were aware that she was deceased at the time the statements in question were issued," the court filing reads.
