An officer with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), John Muthine Mutwiri, was killed in a freak bee-attack incident in Mombasa, Kenya. He was driving a Subaru Forester to Majengo in Mombasa, when bees flew inside the car and stung him several times, according to a police complaint filed at Makupa Police Station on Saturday, December 11.

Mutwiri was accompanied by Commanding Officers Hezekiel Gikambi and Maurice Kinyua, according to a police report. When the swarm of bees suddenly invaded their car, they hurriedly climbed out of the vehicle to escape and ran in different directions at the same time, according to a statement released about the freak incident. However, Mutwiri was overcome by bee stings and collapsed at a neighbouring garage owned by Mwaruwa Chikophe.

According to the statement released, the garage owner, Mwaruwa Chikophe, helped Mutwiri. The statement said, "He managed to grab a Tuk Tuk and hurried him to hospital." Chikophe reportedly went to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital to admit the bee sting victim but Mutwiri was pronounced dead on arrival. The officer worked as an investigation and enforcement officer for KRA, one of the country's most prestigious agencies. Makupa police have initiated an inquiry into the event.

The Kenya Revenue Authority has paid tribute to its employee who died. Mutwiri was described as a devoted and professional tax administrator who carried out his responsibilities carefully and stayed committed to the fundamentals of a world-class tax investigative and enforcement officer in the statement released on Sunday, December 12.

Many Kenyans commented on their social media to express their grief. A few close friends and family also cited personal interactions with the KRA officer. One woman, identified as Irene Kendi, claimed Mutwiri assisted her while she was locked in a poor marriage and helped her get through university in her heartfelt sympathy note. "Our friendship, John Mutwiri, was not only unusual but also intimate. Even in death, I will always tell the tale of how your words of hope and inspiration altered my life"

She stated Kendi praised Mutwiri for his guidance, companionship, and helping her achieve her goals. "Ours was a true friendship, and the anguish in me is awful. We believed in one other, stood by each other in good times and bad, and travelled through life together," she added.
