PARIS, FRANCE: The alliance with France and the arrival of John Adams (Eddie Marsan) have set the stage for intrigue to the unfolding events in Apple TV+'s biographical drama 'Franklin'.

In Episode 5, as Benjamin Franklin (Michael Douglas) focuses on taking utmost advantage of the alliance, John Adams is depicted as opposing his approach.

Meanwhile, the focus shifts to William Temple Franklin's (Noah Jupe) upcoming marriage to Cunegonde Brillon (Lily Dupont) while he remains committed to America's conflict with England.

Franklin and Monsieur Brillon (Marc Duret) initially discuss the upcoming wedding of Cunegonde and Temple. Through this alliance, Franklin aims to secure a safe future for his only grandson in France.

However, Cunegonde's mother, Anne Louise Brillon de Jouy (Ludivine Sagnier) is discontent. Her growing envy comes in the way of her daughter's happiness and by the end of the episode, she interrupts the conversation between her husband and Franklin.

Asserting her power, she calls off the wedding, abruptly ending the brewing romance between Temple and Cunegonde.

Franklin then consoles Temple and tells him that he'll find another match for him.

During the episode, Temple, along with his French friends, vows to fight for America against England.

When he discusses the upcoming diplomatic strategy with Franklin and expresses his decision to participate in the war, Franklin is taken aback.

Immediately halting the meeting, he tells Temple that he isn't allowed to put himself at risk. This makes Temple upset as backing off from his vow would label him a coward.

However, after his wedding is called off, he meets Gilbert (Théodore Pellerin) and his other friends in the jungle and expresses that he is ready for the war.

The episode ends on a cliffhanger as Temple goes against his grandfather and sets on a dangerous mission, putting his life at risk.

It would now be interesting how Franklin would navigate his standing in France while ensuring the Temple's safety.

'Franklin' is available to stream on Apple TV+.
