Former Arsenal star Jose Antonio Reyes, 35, killed in car crash in Spain
35-year-old Jose Antonio Reyes was killed in a horrific car crash in Spain. The former Arsenal star met with a serious car accident in his home town of Utrera on Saturday.
The Sevilla Football Club confirmed the tragic news and said, "We couldn't be confirming worse news. Beloved Sevilla star José Antonio Reyes has died in a traffic collision. Rest in peace." Reyes had been a part of Arsenal for three seasons between 2004 and 2007 and had arrived halfway through Arsenal's Invincibles season for £17m ($2.14M)
As reported by Mirror, he said of the Invincibles' campaign, "It's an unforgettable feeling to finish the season undefeated. To be part of that team full of legends is an unforgettable memory."
He had also enjoyed spells with Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Espanyol and had won 21 caps for Spain. Reyes had been playing for second-tier Extremadura the last term. The fantastic footballer had successfully made his debut for Sevilla at the age of 16 and had joined Arsenal in 2004.
He eventually returned to Sevilla in 2012 and won the Europa League on three different occasions. Reyes won the tournament two times at Atletico Madrid and as a result, was dubbed the most successful player in the history of the tournament. He had also played in the 2006 Champions League final.
Many of his teammates and fans have taken to social media to share their tributes. Arsenal paid a tribute to the former star on Twitter and wrote, "Everyone at Arsenal is devastated by the shocking news that our former player Jose Antonio Reyes has died in a traffic collision in Spain."
"Jose Antonio Reyes: 1983-2019. Rest in peace, Jose." Former teammate Thierry Henry wrote, "I’m devastated to hear the sad news about José Antonio Reyes. Wonderful player, superb teammate, and exceptional human being. I wish his family and friends continued strength and courage to get through this difficult time."
Another former teammate Freddie Ljungberg shared, "Numbed by the news about my former team-mate, Jose Antonio Reyes. Gone far too soon, my thoughts are with his family and friends."
