Surveillance footage captures prison inmate brutally beating a city correction officer till he becomes unconscious
Surveillance footage at the Brooklyn House of Detention has captured the immensely disturbing sight of a rogue inmate beating the crap out of a city correction officer. The murder suspect attacked the officer this week. According to law enforcement sources, the victim was left with a broken nose and jaw during the assault.
The attack took place at the Brooklyn House of Detention at around 1:40 pm on Tuesday. In the shocking footage, it can be seen that the rookie officer who has been identified as Jian Yu is seen closing a gate during a routine patrol of the area just seconds before an inmate known as Pariis Tillery runs up the stairs shirtless and confronts the officer who was on the ninth floor.
The fight between the two gets intense and two more shirtless inmates are seen running up the stairs and surrounding the officer. Yu tries to order Tillery to step back but he does not comply. Through the clip, Tillery is seen punching Yu and then also slamming him to the floor and kicking him. He punches the officer a couple of more times and then walks away. Then moments later, two correction officers rush up the stairs and find Yu unconscious.
According to correction officer's Benevolent Association president Elias Husamudeen Yu was "beaten pretty bad". "He’s still in the hospital. He has a concussion [and] he’s still under observation by the hospital," he continued. He also added that the inmate who attacked Yu is allegedly a member of the 'Bloods' street gang. Tillery was arrested on March 3, 2017, in a fatal shooting incident where he shot a Brooklyn resident Rysheen Ervin.
Tillery was rearrested on many charges including assault in the jailhouse attack. Husamudeen described Yu as "a good officer … As you can see from the video, he was doing his job despite of the circumstances". He continued, "another officer sprayed [a] chemical agent through the gate [in a bid to stop the attack] before he was able to actually respond".
Recently, another city correction officer was attacked with a cane at a Rikers Island facility by five 'Bloods' gang members. The association leader said, "All of this is going on while the commissioner does nothing" while calling out the Correction Department Commissioner Cynthia Brann to resign and also blaming Mayor de Blasio for the recent assaults on correction officers. According to Husamudeen, there have been close to five attacks on correction officers in the past two weeks.
In a statement, Brann said, "Let me be crystal clear: As someone who has spent my entire career in law enforcement, there is nothing more important to me than the safety of our officers. We are making use of all the tools available to us to help keep officers safe and give them the support they need to carry out one of the most difficult jobs in this city, and any claim otherwise is utterly false".
