A Florida woman has been charged with animal cruelty after she let her two dogs maul a duckling to death.

On Sunday, September 1, witnesses reported that they saw Bonnie Nave allow her two dogs maul a duckling to its death, as she just watched them. The 59-year-old woman also reportedly kicked the mother duck who attempted to stop the dogs from attacking.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office claims Nave kicked the mother duck "several times" and allowed her pet dogs to attack the baby duck. She has been charged with animal cruelty. According to an arrest affidavit, Nave did not deny what happened but said the ducks attacked her dogs. The affidavit said, "She thought the ducks were an invasive species." Nave was booked into jail and later released on a $5,000 bond, according to court records.

This isn’t the first reported case of animal cruelty against ducks. Earlier this August, a group of New Hampshire high school football players were caught on video torturing and beating a duck to its death. These students managed to walk scot-free without any serious punishment for their barbaric behavior. "These students are juveniles, so they cannot be charged with anything. Their parents would be charged, and the fines are small, so suspensions and community service, everyone agreed, would be the effective punishment”, reasoned the authorities.

Prior to that in June, two former Alabama college athletes were arrested on charges of aggravated animal cruelty for beating a duck to death with a baseball bat. With the alarming rise in the number of animal cruelty incidents, the laws against animal cruelty should be made tighter and the perpetrators of this cruel behavior need to be punished severely.
