Florida teen smothers sister, 3, to death with pillow as mom tells her to 'quiet her down'
A teen in Florida has been accused of manslaughter after police claimed she smothered her 3-year-old sister to death with a pillow while their mother was on a business call at an extended stay hotel. According to police, the incident took place at Raymond Avenue on July 15. Officers responded to the MainStay Suites in Altamonte Springs after receiving reports of an unresponsive child. The toddler was taken to the hospital, where she was declared dead.
According to a police report, the mother ordered her elder daughter to keep her smaller sister quiet in the suite's living room while she took a business call in the bedroom since the 3-year-old was being noisy. According to the Altamonte Springs Police Department, the girl covered her sister's head with a pillow to calm her down, but when she went back to the room, her sister was unconscious. The police statement reads, "The preliminary investigation revealed that the sibling had placed a pillow over her sister to quiet her down. When she returned to the room, her sister was unresponsive." The teen carried the girl into the bedroom, and the mother called 911.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, the mother performed CPR on the infant while dialing 911. Police asked the duo if there was a defibrillator on hand. A young voice thought to be of the teen replied, according to the Sentinel, “We do not have anything. We’re not home. We do not have a home.” A 911 caller told the dispatcher in the 6 pm Friday call, “She’s not breathing. She’s unresponsive. Her lips are turning blue.”
Altamonte Springs Police Department spokesperson Michelle Montalvo told WESH-TV, “It’s very tragic, it’s a 3-year-old, a very young, young child. Sixteen-year-old is also young. A mother loses both daughters in one night because the 16-year-old was arrested that night.” "If you feel frustrated, reach out to your resources, reach out to your family members, reach out to your village to prevent something as tragic as what happened this weekend," Montalvo added.
