Gainesville police officers responded to the domestic dispute. About 30 minutes after police filed a report for the alleged domestic dispute, the ex-boyfriend came back and made an entry. This time, however, the woman's father shot his daughter's abuser once in the chest with a handgun, according to police.
The suspect immediately fled and responding officers found him mortally wounded near his car. He was declared dead by EMS despite CPR efforts, authorities said. The investigation is ongoing, according to the Gainesville Police Department. Police have not released the names of the ex-boyfriend, the father or his daughter.
'It was definitely out of the blue'
The incident has left residents of the apartment complex shocked. "Everyone I speak to here is so nice," one resident identified by the name Cona told WCJB. "I come and I work out here every day and everyone I interact with is so genuine and kind, so it was one of those things that was definitely out of the blue."
"I’m going to need a lot more details on what happened. It seems like it was a random thing, because this doesn’t happen all the time. But at the same time I am considering moving somewhere else because it happened so close to me", Cona added.
Another resident named Dalton Graham said that the area is generally safe, adding that the complex is located near the University of Florida campus. "I thought that you had the wrong Polos or something," Graham said. "I have nothing but good things to say about the university and the city in general, and especially the Polos Apartments. Never really had anything like this, so it was pretty shocking."
"You see me now," said Graham, "I’m literally walking around in my slides and my pajamas that’s how safe I feel around here. I don’t feel like I need to be concerned about anything like that", he added.
